How much does magic affect your world?

Yes, you certainly need a certain amount fleshed out to start with for consistency, but the rest can roll with the story. For example does magic come from particular people, particular objects, or some combination. @sknox that is a good point too, I have differences there in my world in terms of religion. I'm reading a time travellers guide to the middle ages at the mo and it's talking about this - how people had wide ranging fears/beliefs about what witches / sorcerors could do that went way beyond their actual abilities, and how they believed all sorts of things about other parts of the world.
