Discussion Thread November 2019 75 Word Writing Challenge.

Congrats mosaix
Thanks, everyone.

I’m home now. A few years back I had laser eye surgery for a torn retina. I’ve got some ‘cobwebs’ in that eye that my brain ‘tunes out’ of my vision. Yesterday evening some new cobwebs appeared. NHS 111 telephone advice - off to hospital. I’ve been given an appointment at ophthalmology - for Saturday morning, so it’s probably nothing serious.

Regarding my story. Naturally, I was more than happy with the win, but there was one bit of it that I had difficulty with so I might post in the ‘improving’ thread later.

Out of interest are you short sighted?
Within six months of each other I suffered a PVD in each eye. Although they have calmed down a bit, the volume of floaters in each eye is horrendous. I have learned to live with it.

Apparantly I was always a prime candidate due to my extreme short sightedness. Could be you have suffered one as the main symptom is a sudden onset or increase in floaters.

Congrats mosaix

No, I’m long sighted, Peter. The original floaters were a by product of the retinal tear. But I was told that the gell in the eye-ball loses fluidity as I get older and that can also lead to floaters. However I was told ‘any change’ in that eye should be taken seriously. I’ll know more tomorrow.

BTW I was petrified when I was told that a needed laser eye surgery. But it was absolutely fine. No pain just a slight, dull ache. So if anyone reading this is told they need the same - relax, it’s a simple fix for a serious problem.

A PVD is detachment of the gel so sounds likely. They just need to check it hasn't also torn or detached the retina when it came away. Guessing they will put drops in your eyes to dilate the pupils so they can look properly - my eyes looked like an aliens for a few hours afterwards

Best of luck

Congratulations, mosaix - it's a very good story, and the ending is especially effective. Best of luck with the vision issues.

Commiserations to Victoria and everyone who made it close. :)

Congratulations, mosaix! Yet another win, dammit! (I've not done my stats for the last umpteen months, so anyone wanting to know how many Challenges the blasted man has won -- too many, obviously!! :p -- will have to wait a bit, unless Chris p can immediately step in with the answer!)

Congrats and commiserations to Victoria on second place, and reiver and Starbeast on joint third.

Parson, you wanted explanations from me. I think you got the plot, but in case anyone else was puzzling over it: a man has been sent on an undercover mission when his wife is heavily pregnant** and he's waiting for news and worrying, and everything is conspiring to remind him of his worries, so he's seeing pregnant women everywhere and even the place where he's working (Natal) is an ever present reminder, but his bosses send him a coded message confirming the birth went OK.

The really confusing bit is probably the title. I couldn't think of anything apart from Birth Day, which rather gave the game and the punch line away, so as it's a spy story I thought encoding it would be the answer. I used the simplest code possible, just moving the letters one place forward, ie the reverse of IBM becoming HAL*** so Birth Day becomes CJSUI EBZ. And Hugh was kind enough to jog voters into thinking about it further with his:
Well it took me a while, but in the end the references came together and I had no choice but to vote for UIF KVEHF (probably mis-spelt). Natal was the light bulb moment.
(my bolding) :giggle:

** why is the expression "heavily pregnant"? I mean, the poor women knows they've put on weight, so it seems a bit unnecessary to rub it in.

*** which apparently was entirely coincidental in 2001: A Space Odyssey and not a coded message at all.

It's the thought of lasers approaching your eyes!
When lasers were new and high tech we all gaped at the big screen....

"No Mr Bond, I expect you to die"

Ok. I’ve chosen a theme / genre for December and forwarded it to Nixie for approval by the powers-that-be. Also I might not be around so I’ve asked Nixie to start the threads at the appropriate time.

The last time I chose a theme for December I tried to make it so that people could choose whether or not to make their entries festive based. I’ve tried to do the same this time. Hope you all enjoy.

Congratulations @mosaix! This is becoming a habit.

Thanks to everyone for the mentions. Seems like mine was a 'close but no cigar' effort this month. Still, I had far too much fun coming up with the silly names for my definitely-not-James-Bond super-spy's previous, ah, encounters and I was very pleased with the title so I'm calling it a win!

Congratulation Mosaix
@mosaix - I'm relieved to hear all went well with the surgery, my friend

Thank you for the mentions: @Cat's Cradle - @Ursa major

@reiver33 Thank you for the Stealth Vote. I'm stunned again. We both got Bronze Medals. Cool.
