Discussion - January 2020 - 75 word writing challenge

First, well done @elvet

Second, I'm shocked, I tells ya, shocked
Winner:
  • Who's The Daddy by M. Robert Gibson

I thought my little saga was maybe a bit too reliant on references that you good folks did not understand, hence a single shortlist mention (thanks @StilLearning) prior to Ursa turning up.

Here's an explanation for anyone who cares...

First, the title is a statement not a question. And who do we know called Who?
Second, there was an episode entitled The Doctor's Daughter in which the good Doctor's clone/daughter was named Jenny.
Third, which evil aliens' catchphrase is "Exterminate. Exterminate."? That's right, Daleks, hence Daddy saying "I've had problems with that kind before."

Anyway, I look forward to February's challenge. :p

And I'm off to rewrite my 300 words for the 29th time

Congratulations, @elvet! I ended up voting for your story, as it had the most-realised story for me. A lot of depth for 75 words.

As always there were other entries which I really enjoyed.
Starbeast always gives me a wry chuckle but this month, Perp gave us Starbeastian in-joke humour, which had me chortling away. Mouse, you just made me laugh with the dry last line - a wry look at unintended consequences. M. Robert Gibson brought a warmth to my heart (and a shiver to my spine) with the idea of a stray and lonely Dalek being taken in. And TDZ, what can be said other than the trials and Tribble-ations of a starship captain never end?

Congratulations Elvet
@elvet

Side Note: My list was for Runner-Ups. Everyone else made my Long List

Second Place Silver Award has to go to @Perpetual Man
Thanks immensely for the laugh and using me as inspiration which (a surprise to me) got you into 2nd place for real.

@Guttersnipe Awesome creature tale. It was fun to imagine your story.

A huge THANKS to all who mentioned me.

My Story
1580331631166.png

Dogs that were made into humanoid warriors to defend Earth against robots from outer space. I wanted a comic book type tale.
If I had more words to use, I would have mentioned that the Animal Soldier Program did not work with cats.
I believe cat owners can make their own lists of why the use of felines was a waste of time.

@Elckerlyc: Nope, I've been nowhere near China, although we have been recently celebrating the Chinese New Year (but I've never heard of a disease that spreads via specific holidays). Apologies for sounding ominous! :) The flu was only beyond-the-norm for me personally.

I had planned to write something, but I got busy. I know, likely excuse, but it's true. I've been trying to get a story ready to submit with a chance to get it published. I do apologize and hope for better luck next month.

Congratulations @elvet. Yours would have definitely made my shortlist if I'd had the chance to write one!

Not really being cat person, I figured I would probably be up against it this month! That said, I was pretty happy with the results. Sadly, all the fun extra background I conceived of while writing it couldn't make the final cut. Even the protagonist's name (which I was oddly fond of) was sacrificed to the merciless mistress that is the word count. I also wish there had been more time to detail just how disgusting Groagan the Void Beast truly is. Ah well, another time, perhaps!

Sadly, all the fun extra background I conceived of while writing it couldn't make the final cut.

One of my favourite lines that didn't make the cut:

"Corella's fronds wrinkled. The last time they had done that things were... better... between us."

We have four as well, and coincidentally our oldest is 22. He is doing well - still thinks he is the alpha of the area, even though he has no upper canines (well few teeth full stop), has limited vision in his left eye, one kidney and is on daily heart and blood pressure medication. You wouldn't know it at times. He doesnt sleep much at night and doesnt particularly enjoy his renal diet but he is a big personality and a huge part of our lives.

Sadly our old Timmy has passed away.

Oh no! Heartbreaking.
Feel for you.
Rest in peace Timmy I know you will be sorely missed.
