Quiet Love

His time drew near; darkness now, at the edges.
His loving Queen of countless years by his bedside.
Whispering with her last kiss, ”Darling, you must spend these final moments with the one you truly love.”
She turned to Sir James, “Thank you brave Knight for your discretion. The devotion and love you gave my husband filled a void I never could.” She slid off her wedding ring and placed it gently in his hand.

Some Drink to Remember

Mighty Gorlach, the Hirsute returns from the hunt; a bleeding Hart slung under one of his powerful arms.

Alack! His village lies, a smoldering wreckage.

"Hush your lamentations, woman, and give tidings of my Wife!"

"Alas, your wife was burned to death inside your hut; but I've salvaged her skull. As a drinking vessel it will keep her memory alive."

"Aiaiyeee! A curse be upon all gods!
... I think I need a big hug."

The Darkness Before the Fairy Tale

Annabelle’s knees buckled and she hit the flagstones.

This wasn’t how the books told it. The white knight always won and saved the damsel. Yet Malagar cackled while light faded from Bastion’s eyes.

“Thus ends the Veneer line. And I survive the prophecy,” the Magus said. “I shall make the tower impregnable this time.”

He shoved Annabelle back towards her prison. He could do whatever he wanted. She cradled her belly. She didn’t matter anymore.

Heart of Oak
I’m dying. I can climb only slowly through the branches, towards the heart Drys carved eighty years ago – remembrance of love, gateway to being together.
When I touch the heart, my spirit will join his.
My body fails, but I won’t fall. Drys won’t let me. His limbs support me, his leaves whisper encouragement.
We wept when he returned to his tree-body and life.
We’ll rejoice when I reach his heart and die.

Home Truths From Abroad
.
“I died on the Crusade, Maureen, or so your stepfather believed. I survived, disfigured.” Galehaut thought he’d killed me and took my wife and lands. “Today, your mother recognised my eyes. I told Galehaut as I defeated him.”
“What’s in the bag?” My daughter, too young to have witnessed the tourney, doesn’t recognise me. “Did my mother give you a boon?”
“This –” Galehaut’s head “– is my memento, Maureen. My boon is your future safety.”

Knight Error

“He thought, because he kissed me, I was going to marry him!”

“You weren’t even conscious! What a nerve!”

“Ugh, I know, ‘rescuers’ are the worst.”

“Yeah, this one guy ‘rescued’ me from the rain and thought I’d marry him. His mother tried to trap me with a pea under the mattresses. It’s my pendant now, symbol of the one I got away from.”

The two princesses stared pensively at the pea, and then kissed.
