Read this book on the weekend. Published 1958. Very good story. Recommended.

Couldn't help but think of that Canadian science fiction TV series "The Starlost" while reading this book. Ah, if only that TV show could have been anywhere near the quality of Non-Stop. I saw it again last year on a Roku channel. The odd story was ok, but towards the end it fell off of the rails. And it got cancelled before the first year was even finished filming.

Non-Stop is a classic story of the multi-generational space ship that has apparently has lost its way, and a small group of people set out to explore it, some not even realizing that it is indeed a space ship. And, having recently read the Helliconia novels, it was interesting to see even in his early stories how Aldiss developed his main characters. For example, the cool, competent and initially ruthless Lieutenant Vyann setting a pattern for perhaps Helliconia's Admiral Soldier-Priest Odi Jeseratabhar of Sibornal (love typing that name out!). I think that is something that I enjoy with Brian Aldiss: not just the plots but the depth of his protagonists. And he includes additional elements that add suspense to his stories ... such as the rats in Non-Stop ...

Any recommendations for stories with a similar plot? (Even if it doesn't' quite match the quality of Non-Stop)

I really like '60s-'70s Aldiss, but I've never read this one. It always seemed rather old-fashioned compared to his later stuff. But maybe I should give it a try.

The gears turn slowly sometimes. Went and dug around in a box of books in the closet. Came up with Litany of the Long Sun by Gene Wolfe.

Non stop is on David Pringles's best one hundred SF books . If you enjoy one you will probably enjoy them all , I did .
