Entering a painting (query)

Totally changing the art form, but in the Elder Scrolls Oblivion, which came out in 2006, the quest A Brush with Death you do indeed enter a painting in order to rescue a painter.

I read some of the Buccaneer series when I was young. A boy goes into a magical picture of a ship and joins the crew.

Excellent, thank you! Sounds like it's directly influenced by the beginning of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

I can't find any signs or reference that it has been translated. I think it never was. Yes, it has, just found out.
The book - of which the title translates as Eric, or the Book of Insects - was written in 1940 by Godfried Bomans (1913-1971). It is basically a book for kids, but his style and humor of writing makes it an enjoyable read for all. Bomans is my great example.

I just found a Wikipedia page about Bomans and this book. It turns out it has been translated in English after all.
Erik or the small book of insects
So strange. Just got my copy. It begins with a lovely quote from Leonardo, about how "we are all exiles inside the frame of a strange painting." Excited, I set about researching it, only to not find a proper source for it anywhere. Actually, the only source seems to be the Erik book itself. Bomans may have completely fabricated it!

I can't find any proof either way. But considering the man he was - a bit of a comedian - it's quite possible he fabricated the quote. His essays often were a cross between philosophical and comedy.
