Word Count Tyranny

As someone who's still learning how to get to the end being fairly structured is a good guide to how i'm going with the plot. So when i get to 25k words and am feeling a lack of conflict, I go back to the beginning. Similarly with chapters, if they're too short I look to see if I've missed something or they need more work.
 
Journalists have to hit wordage prescribed by their editors, often low 100s. It needs to start with something to hook a reader. Are books really different??

I found in my crime books to sketch the beginning and end, and later throw away or heavily amend that scaffolding.
