Tolkien related material

PM, is that the edition that has a recording of Tolkien reading the troll episode? How long does that run, if so? And (gulp) what's the ISBN for this package?

Hi, yes the extract includes reading of the troll episode.

ISBN 978-0-00-825954-9. RRP £50 but £35 on Amazon at the minute

This an index of the CD:

Chapter 1: An Unexpected Party

'Chip the glasses and crack the plates!' - 34 seconds

'Far over the misty mountains cold...' - 54 seconds

Chapter 2: Roast Mutton

'There they all sat glum and wet and muttering...' 16 minutes 32 seconds

Chapter 5: Riddles in the Dark

'Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum...' 29 minutes 53 seconds

Thanks, much appreciated, PM. Sixteen minutes and thirty-two seconds of Tolkien reading that I have never heard do tempt me to buy this edition. The other selections have been available for many years. If I bought this edition and gave away the book, there isn't any text on it that would indicate that there was audio material, is there?

The presentation box which houses the contents mentions that there is a CD contained within. The Hobbit book itself seems to be a replica of the original. No mention of it being part of a package.

If I order this, I'll probably keep everything, since I don't have the text of The Hobbit in the original form. I might give away, though, a spare copy of the revised text. I don't really want to be a Tolkien Collector (or, rather, a frustrated Would-Be Tolkien Collector). But I sure would like to hear the trolls episode. Tolkien is a really enjoyable reader of his own work.

Thanks to your information, etc., I did order a copy, and it arrived today. Hearing Tolkien read the troll episode was a delight even though the recording was inferior to the Riddle in the Dark recording. Tolkien's otherwise unavailable lecture about dragons will be a treat to read, I've no doubt, and it was fun to hold up the map to the light to see the runes appear.

I didn't know that! (runs to check his own map)

This forthcoming book

should be worth getting. Hasty people will say this has to be a milking of a cash cow, but I don't think so. I do, however, hope that it is better edited than Grybauskas's Sense of Tales Untold. (My 2,100-word review of that book for Beyond Bree is attached.)

A "deluxe" edition of the Beorhtnoth book is also available. This includes an audio CD of Tolkien's performance of his play with Christopher Tolkien introducing him, I believe. I wonder if the binding has sewn signatures or is just a glorified paperback as regards binding ("perfect binding").
