Discussion Thread -- JULY 2020 -- 300-Worder Writing Challenge (#38)

That's great BT. I expected Floyd fans would get it, and I think both Syd and Wish You Were Here are iconic enough for people who aren't into them to make the connection, but I did wonder about those who would say "Pink who?" and they might not get it. Of course, it's not for publication or anything (welllll.....) ;) but I was a little apprehensive that some people here might not get it. Not that it bothered me they wouldn't vote for it, that's not the case at all. I'm not all that worried about that. I'm new here and don't expect anyone to vote for me. But when you create something it's gratifying to have readers understand it. You don't want to have to be explaining it, which kind of ruins it.

As for Pink Floyd, yeah. I'm no real fan of the first two albums, and The Endless RIver was, to me, a sad way to end things, but I'm a major fan of everything else. Yes, even Division Bell and Momentary Lapse of Reason!
Well, I loved your story. They are all top notch so far. At the risk of this descending into a music conversation, Wish You Were Here is my favourite too, but I also love Animals and The Wall. I was lucky enough to see Roger Waters in concert twice over here and it was mind blowing! Welcome to the Chronicles (although I'm barely qualified myself to even give the greeting!)

Thanks man. Right back atcha. I think Dark Side will forever be my favourite, followed by The Wall, as those were the two I first heard. It was a while before I go to hear Animals, can you believe? Yeah, I guess for the sake of the thread if we want to discuss this further maybe we can start a conversation, and anyone else who wants to can join us. I don't want to derail the thread, otherwise we might have to run like hell from the dogs of war, make it a case of us and them and end up with brain damage, all for a momentary lapse of reason. One slip, that's all it takes.

-K2-: Elements of classic tales of the Wild West combine with subjective impressions to create a tense and suspenseful encounter that leads to a startling conclusion. The subtle and indirect way that a meeting in the past leads to a resolution with vast implications adds intrigue to the story.

If I review the entries here am I allowed to use ratings or is that seen as an element of critique? The ratings mean nothing more than a measure of how much I enjoyed or understood the story, but if they're not allowed I'll edit them out before posting. Thanks.

Obviously, staff members will be the final word on this matter, but I feel like ratings would guide votes toward one story or another, so I would personally prefer not, at least not until voting begins. After voting begins, I personally don't see how it is substantially different from shortlists.

Just my 2 cents/pence on the matter.

I just wish I could make the edits that just now struck me :( But, as they say, fools rush in... :cautious:

Well, sort of an idea bets my usual of: The... uh...

Well, you haven't heard my sort of an idea yet so the jury's still out on that one... and have you SEEN some of the things I've posted to these challenges before? That you think my sort of idea beats out anything is equal parts flattering and denying history... :giggle:

It makes no difference whatsoever when you post your story. Ideas for edits or awareness of glaring grammatical errors only strike after you posted. It is a nasty habit the Muses employ happily to inform you of these things when it's too late to do anything about it.
*sigh*

Also, you cannot be selective in which story you'll review. If you do one review, you'll have to review all stories.

Yeah I know that. I'm going to mini-review (well, comment really on) all of them. I just wanted to know if, within that, I was allowed to rate them or if it's frowned upon. That's all.

Truer words are not often spoken...

When reviewing any challenges entries please keep them positive, we don't critic entries.
Best not to rate them we don't want to discourage anyone from entering.

So is that a yes or no to ratings? It's not that important; I just don't want to break any rules or offend anyone by doing something I shouldn't.

The way I read it--and know this is just my take, so I may be wrong--is that they prefer that you do NOT rank, rate, or critique (point out aspects you don't like or would change, no matter how justified or well intended) entries in this thread, before voting is over. The reason is, your opinions might influence other peoples voting. After voting, then you're free to make note of favorites, rank, and so on with positive remarks. So, to not show preference, if you review one, review all in a positive fashion.

After it is all said and done, IF someone wishes their work critiqued, they will ask in the 'Improving Writing' thread.

Rules regarding reviews and ranking may be found here: Rules for the Writing Challenges
