I always find that my recommendations lean toward modern books As the classics are nearly always covered quite well.

Iain M. Banks‘s Culture work is always my first recommendation. He is by far my favourite author and I adore his work.

Alistair Reynolds “Revelation Space“ series I also enjoyed very much. Revelation Space and Chasm City are the best of the series, but I still rated Redemption Ark and Absolution Gap.

I adored Philip K. Dick’s short stories and would always recommend them over his novels.

Greag Bear’s Forge of God and Anvil of Stars is a favourite of mine. People criticise (quite fairly) his character development, but the story is great and the ending for FoG is epic and easily one of the best endings that I have read.

Stephen King’s The Stand is excellent. Some people might consider it horror, but the post apocalyptic setting makes it quite acceptable to be listed as science fiction, IMO.

Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Dogs of War is a new favourite. I read it last year and it was an impressive read. I’m really looking forward to the sequel next year. I have Children of Time and Children of Ruin on my tbr pile.

I have enjoyed Ben Bova’s Grand Tour series and need to get back into them.

Edmund Coopers books I found really enjoyable as a teenager. They’re short, pretty engaging and easy to read. The Cloud Walker and A Far Sunset are my favourites.

I would also recommend Dan Abnett’s Gaunts Ghosts

The Last Unicorn by Peter S Beagle

The Kane The Mystic Swordsman Series by Karl Edward Wagner . This is one I recommend quite a bit . It's a 5 book dark fantasy series whose main character Kane, is an immortal heroic villain/antihero . He's not a nice guy by any definition but, is an interesting protagonist and, this is a fun series to read . The books in this series.
1. Bloodstone
2. Darkness Weaves
3. Dark Crusade
4. Death Angel's Shadow
5. Nightwinds

I'd second Titus Groan and I'd add The Island of Doctor Moreau by H.G. Wells. Do these recommended books have to be SFF?

Some I didn't think of earlier:
The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor LaValle (978-0-7653-8786-8)
A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay (978-0-06-236323-7) -- duh. Maybe my favorite read of the last decade.
The Fisherman by John Langan (978-1-939905-21-5)

In my earlier post, I suggested recent works I think are still in print. A few I'm less sure about include,
The Circus of Dr. Lao by Charles Finney (978-1-4732-1367-8)
The Rim of Morning by William Sloane (978-1-59017-907-9) -- contains To Walk the Night and The Edge of Running Water
Songs of a Dead Dreamer / Grimscribe by Thomas Ligotti (978-0-14-310776-7)

Randy M.

The Humanoids by Jack Williamson
The Hungry Moon by Ramsey Campbell
Midnight Sun By Ramsey Campbell
Ancient Images by Ramsey Campbell
Cold Print by Ramsey Campbell
Carrion Comfort by Dam Simmons
Haunted Castles the Complete Gothic Tales of Ray Russell
Perchance to Dream : Selected Stores of Charles Beaumont

Eugene Vodolazkin's Laurus will be new to most people visiting your store, but it is very good, and a long way from being a tired flogging-of-the-fantasy-tropes thing; but not "experimental" in some off-putting way either.

Thank you to everyone so far! I’ve spent the last day or two popping these up and will share on Monday, when the site goes live. Not all of them were in the wholesale, or easy to get in the UK, so if your suggestion has been left off, that’s the reason, not that I ignored it.

I now also have the TBR pile from hell..... :D

Maybe a bit late to the party, but here‘s three SF works I totally adore:

Vernor Vinge, A Deepness in the Sky
Alastair Reynolds, Chasm City
C.J. Cherryh, The Chanur books
