Giant world with a endless railway?? Planet so big no one knows how big, Reverend's son kidnapped by society with Airships

I don't remember the reverend and his son, but I do remember a book from years back with a gigantic world and railways across it - and if I recall correctly these were not standard railroads but gigantic multilayered constructions moving slowly along the rails - as in densely packed cities. I can't remember author or title, but unlikely to be Ian Banks, Alastair Reynolds or Peter Hamilton as in general I don't get on with their books and I did read the whole of that book. (I liked Peter Hamilton's earlier works but not for some years now.) There was possibly some relativity sort of theory in there as well, with twists in time. No space flight, all action taking place on the strange, slow moving, cities and railroad.
