Science Fiction with Strong/Compelling Characters

The novel does have a gothic tinge to it - especially the Harkonnens - which I think David Lynch picked up on and emphasised in the 1984 film.

Almost any by C.J. Cherryh, especially her earlier works. I‘ll name the Chanur series as an example, but there are many others that stick with me.

Please don't ridicule, but I prefer quirky characters with inner strength such as Garrett in Glen Cooks novels, Vimes in Terry Pratchett's Watch books, and then there is Dumarest in the rather cliche'd series by EC Tubb, but still good escapist fun.
