BristolCon 2021

Again fairly useless information on the web site - like when it is - how long it lasts - where it's held.

You know the basic stuff.

If they can't organise that on their web site it doesn't sound promising for the actual event.

So far the only info I've seen is provisional 30th Oct from @Ursa major above.

If that's the case then it will clash with Halloween when most folk in the rest of the country would prefer not to be traveling.

It's in the top left corner of the front page, TEiN. It's always a day long, starting around 1000, and going on until early evening, when the after-con events, and barcon take place.

I forgot to mention that I drive there as: 1) the trains take a long time and at inconvenient times; 2) parking is limited, so being there early (the best part of a day early) makes all the difference.

Has Bristol banned diesel cars?

That’s a completely different page than the Google search took me to which is here - Welcome to BristolCon.org. Maybe it’s an old site or the test site that’s visible?

That doesn't look good at all. I hope their SEO gets on that.

Looking at it, the clue's in the dev. starter in the address. I think that's a developer's template page, but it shouldn't be visible on the web at all!

And certainly not the first hit….@serendipity - any way to let the con know?
I dropped off the BristolCon committee at the end of last year (because it was time for me to move on to other things), but I have e-mailed three relevant people who are on the committee about the issue. So hopefully between them they'll be able to sort out what is going on. Thanks for alerting me to this.

Hi Folks,

I followed the link in Serendipity 's post to the membership portal above.

While I agree that might have been the wrong thing to do, it is fairly sparse of information other than the prices with no link to their home page.

I now see that home page does indeed hold a wealth of information regarding the event and I must hold my head in shame for misjudging the organisers abilities. I can only hope they can forgive me.

Hope you all enjoy the event.

Maybe in the future when the weekend doesn't clash so closely to the 31st, Mrs Tein and I will give it a go.

I wouldn't know -- my car uses petrol -- but the issue that concerns me is the capacity of the hotel's car park which is, obviously, of a size based on the number of guest rooms it has, rather than the number of people who might turn up to an SFF convention...

...that and not wanting to get up at the crack of dawn to drive, in the dark, along often winding** roads that, in some places, are little better than farm tracks*** (with farm vehicles travelling on them), roads that have the cheek to call themselves trunk roads. (When I drive back in the evening, I take the long way back, using the M4, A34, M3, M27, etc., roads that are far less likely to come to a complete stop on a Saturday evening than on a Saturday morning (not that I'd know) or a Friday afternoon (which, sadly, I do know).)

** - There's one place where an old stone building stands on a corner which has a sign asking lorry drivers to be careful not to drive into it.

*** - There's a road sign, at one point, warning drivers that the road ahead (a section bracketed by two sharp right-angle turns) is likely to be muddy (probably because it separates one part of a farm from another).

Sorry I've been out and about most of the day... but I had an e-mail back from the BristolCon committee at lunchtime.

The committee thanks the people involved in bringing the matter to their attention and apologises for the page concerned not being more helpful. They are working to improve the situation.

The BristolCon programme is now up and can be found here.

Follow the links on that page to find out the activities at the Panel 1, Panel 2 and SGS 1 locations.

Just a quick note to say that BristolCon have said they will not be selling memberships on the day - you must buy your membership by 23:59 on Monday 25th October - that's tomorrow peoples!
