The first annual Self-Published Science Fiction Competition is open - apparently 200 of the 300 slots are taken so far. This is the SF version of the SPFBO that has been running for the last few years.

SPSFC Submissions - Hugh Howey

(Mods: if this is in the wrong place, please move. I popped it here to be the most likely spot to catch the attention of writers given the relatively short window of opportunity.)

I got the email confirmation that Streamrider is in.

I've got my nails, but I'm not sure my teeth are up to it.

Oooh, goody. Someone else to jitter with. :D
I'm currently refusing to jitter. Much.

Someone who appears to be a book reviewer has just added it on Goodreads, so I'm assuming that's my judge/reviewer for the first round. From his reviews and such like, he appears to like strange with a warped sense of humour, so that gives me a smidgen of hope.

Yeah, these things are a lottery, and IC is an old book so I'm not going to get too excited. It'll just be a fun ride. :)

I went through this a few years back with SPFBO. Really the "best" comment I got out of the first (and only) round reviewer was that it was well written with good magic, but the bottom line was that the book's rather adult and vulgar tone didn't suit the reviewer.

Oops. Streamrider has a rather adult and vulgar tone, just not quite as adult and vulgar as my urban fantasies.

Inish's cover is in the Top 100 selected for the cover contest. Is was designed by Gary Compton, and he was dead proud of it - and rightly so. I still love this piece of artwork, it says Belfast all over it! It's in my signature below, and the link to the competition is here. As they say in Northern Ireland, vote early, people, and vote often. :D

Congrats, Jo. :giggle:

I've not heard anything, but it does seem to very much depend on which group of judges your book is with. Mine seem to be a mostly youtube based group and did a short video introducing their thirty books. I've seen no update since.
Yeah some groups are updating regularly, some not at all.

I thought I'd check up on this today, as I'd not heard anything yet. Everything still on for a Jan 30th 2022 by the looks. Noticed both Jo and myself made it through the first cut to the quarter finals:

Anyone else know if they've made it past round 1?

I'm still waiting to hear. One of the judges has a twitter thread giving his personal opinion on each book based on a 10-20% read but hasn't reached mine yet.

I noticed you were through - congrats - but hadn’t posted as I wasn’t sure if you wanted to be included on the thread. Well done! Crossing all for biskit

So that's me out, and the comment from one of the judges has to be one of the more depressing reasons for being eliminated:

"This one started out with some action but i couldn't really follow some of these aspects/concepts"

And huge congrats to @Brian G Turner who has made it into the next round - one of our of 30 books from the Boundary’s Edge team.

Destroyer: A solid piece of space opera. The confines of a spaceship made for a tense setting, and the strong characterisation and well-handled plot twists made this a winner for our judges.

Just seeing this now - sorry Biskit. Do you have any reviews that indicate this is a problem or critiques here?

Oh! Happy news - always welcome, especially these days! :)
