This is an interesting thread.
I recall once an author who wanted to be recognized as having written literary fiction whose fiction was labeled by the publisher as science fiction and they had a fit.
I think it only makes a difference if you are seeking recognition as a literary author and that that distinction trumps any need to make money from what you write.
Other-wise when trying to market a book: find the genre that best suits your story and also has the best potential for garnering the attention of the most number of readers and therefor the most money.
