T. J. Martinel's The Stringer.
It's a horribly plausible near future "dystopia with hope" to use a phrase cribbed from Niven. Genre blending, noir 30s vibe, done with a light touch. Very underappreciated author. Might be the best novel I've read in the last few years.
 
There was a series of Star Wars novels.
Han Solo At Star's End was one of them--and they had a criminal organization operating outside of the Empire.
 
In Ken MacLeod's Newton's Wake, descendants of a Glaswegian crime family, the Carlyles, control a network of interplanetary traversable wormholes, the Skein, in a post singularity universe.
 
The Luna series by Ian Mcdonald. It's supposed to be about 5 family corporations on the moon but to me it felt like 5 crime families.
