I've never thought about cats and science fiction before, so never noticed that connection. But I feel fantasy has the opposite, there seems to be a lot of dogs (especially wolves). Game of Thrones with the Starks and their dire-wolves; Robin Hobb's series the best character (in all of fantasy) is a wolf; Wheel of Time has a big thing about Perrin and his wolves, Harry Potter has Sirius Black as a big dog, and werewolves pretty big in a bunch of others.
Can't think of much where cats have a dominant role in the story. Only thing I can think of is the Narnia lion.

Sometimes it's just cats, sometimes you are the cats... And sometimes it's much, much worse...One of the Gibson Neuromancer books refers to cats having truly alien minds that people could scan and experience.
See my Jan 31 post.Gary Seven's cat/person Isis comes to mind, from "Assignment :Yesterday" in ST TOS.
That reminds me, of course, of Korob's familiar (or is it the sexy Sylvia? or is it a tiny alien made out of pipe cleaners and feathers?) in the season 2 episode "Catspaw" (but that may have been mentioned already, too).Gary Seven's cat/person Isis comes to mind, from "Assignment :Yesterday" in ST TOS.
