DISCUSSION THREAD -- July 2022 -- 300 Word Writing Challenge #46

Oh gosh I wasn’t expecting to do so well when I submitted - big thanks to everyone who voted or mentioned. It meant a lot (see in a moment)

Commiserations to Christine (passes the yellow bridesmaid dress along) - I loved your story, it was my fav :)

This little story was a personal one - although I am not the person on the path in the woods (just so no one gets worried). I suffered a sudden loss this year, as some of you know, and I’ve been hoping for my bro to turn up in a dream so we can chat (I find it comforting when others I’ve lost do) but he is contrary and hasn’t and that was the core of the idea.

congrats Jo. A well deserved win for a beautiful story.
And thanks to everyone who voted for and mentioned me. This was the most votes i've recieved for a 300, and I think my favourite flash fiction i've written. I spent four days struggling to polish a turd of a story about a nightblind owl who finds a bioluminescant mushroom forest (it was bad). Then with 2 days left to submit, I was browsing my book of ideas, saw an old idea about an experience-conveying language, and out popped my story (a lot easier and more fun to write than my stupid owl story).

Congratulations Jo! Brilliant story, with so much heart. Hope your brother stops by for a chat very soon. Wonderful work on your story.

Commiserations, Christine Wheelwright. The voting was so close, and for so long. It was exciting to watch, and see how things would turn out. Another excellent story.

And congrats to everyone who participated. Laura's artwork inspired a really good Challenge.

Big thanks to @The Judge for the late listing, and to @farntfar for the late vote and again for everyone who listed or voted for my entry, earlier. :) I greatly appreciate it.

Alright - the next one of these starts in 1.5 months, October 1st. See you all there. Can't wait to see the next picture we will be writing from, CC

Congratulations to @Jo Zebedee on a well deserved victory, and condolences for the loss.

For my own story, thanks for mentions from @BT Jones , @M. Robert Gibson , @Starbeast , @Daysman , @The Judge , @farntfar , and a vote (!) from @Astro Pen .

The still-too-long title of my story is part of a quote from the movie Gladiator; addressing some of his troops before the opening battle scene Maximus says "If you find yourself alone, riding in green fields with the sun on your face, do not be troubled. For you are in Elysium, and you are already dead!" This was meant to reinforce that the protagonist of the first part is the (or is the soul of the?) dying/dead soldier from the second part. The first part I tried to write somewhat ambiguous, so it could (should?) have been up to the reader whether it was a soul searching for the afterlife/salvation, or the fever dream of a dying mind before fading into eternal nothingness, or something else entirely. I'd also intended for the term "saved" in the last line to be possibly interpreted in multiple ways (by the reader, if not by the medic in the story), and in the scene in my head there was a solitary church burning against the horizon but I couldn't work that in there how I wanted under the word limit.

Anyways. Lots of great stories. On to the next one!

Getting a Portugese tart to vote in the SFF 300
I thought it was obvious that an item of pastry couldn't possibly cast any votes...

...whereas there was nothing** stopping those hundreds of Spartan soldiers from voting.

** - Well, give or take their lack of knowledge of the English language... oh, and their deaths at the Battle of Thermopylae (although, as we all know, death hasn't always been a barrier to taking further action for the Heroes of Ancient Greece).

Well done @Jo Zebedee , sorry to hear about the backstory. Got me rereading, powerfull stuff. I don't see 'Into a Blood Red Sky' in the promotions (apologies if you're keeping it low key for now)

Congratulations Jo

And well done all round - there were some really fine efforts.

Thanks Parson and Victoria for the reviews and thanks for all who gave me a vote or a mention. My story needed closer to 350 words to really do it justice and in hindsight, instead of settling for the pared version, I should just have scrapped it.

Congrats @Jo Zebedee

Thanks to for the votes chrispenycate, BT Jones, therapist, AnRoinnUltra and for the likes folks. Of more importance, thanks for the nice words :)

Like Jo's, mine had a basis in reality with the three characters, a mix of my two grandfathers, my father and myself. Last time I wrote something like this was for my English Language mock O level, way back in 1986. That time was another 'write a tale based on a photo'.

Congratulations Jo ! And also well done to Christine for a notable second place.

And thanks to farntfar for the shortlisting and - woo-hoo! - a last day vote from Ursa. :):)

Congratulations to Jo.

Huge thanks to Raz2k13, Daysman and Peter V for actual votes! (Anything more than one makes it an exceptional result for me.)

Thanks also to Swank, AnRoinnUltra, Parson, and Starbeast for the honourable mentions.

Congratulations Jo Zebedee

Silver Medal @Christine Wheelwright

@BigJ & @VRlass a huge THANK YOU for the votes :giggle:

Plus a ginormous THANK YOU for all of the mentions and wonderful comments :D

My Story: My original idea was about mushrooms from space that turned people into monsters. Then I thought, "what if it turned them into extreme procrastinators". And, "what if an evil scientist caused that to happen". It sounded like a "spy thriller" to me. Then the Muse burst into the room, and you folks know the rest.

@M. Robert Gibson Thanks for re-posting my story Cake Fall. It was nice to see it again. :)
