D and D movie preview

Not setting myself up for a letdown.

It surely will not be as I heartily desire, yet it can be fun.

Let's wait and see...

Displacer beast! Zep! Hugh Grant! I'm in.

(Seriously, how did they get the licence to use Whole Lotta Love? I thought Jimmy Page was notorious for not letting any Zeppelin songs be used for films and TV etc. Can it be that he's a fan of the project?)

Thor: Ragnarok used "Immigrant Song" so maybe the policy is loosening. Also this "Whole Lotta Love" seems to be a cover, not sure how that works.

As for the D&D movie... they should have gotten Tom Hanks to reprise his Mazes & Monsters role!

It looks fun, honestly, but the Joss Whedon or JJ Abrams style of endless quips and genre pranks has always been pretty shallow and has grown quite stale to me. When I think of the enormous money and effort that goes into these disposable blockbusters I can't help thinking how they could be making much, much better things.

School of Rock used that too, but I believe that was OK'd by Page personally.
Jack Black sent him a video from the set of SoR asking for permission to use the song if Jack Black's commentary is to be believed...
found the video!
As for DnD:HAT, I hope Hugh Grant goes the full Paddington 2 overacting. He does it so well.

I want it to be good but the characters in the trailer left me feeling a bit meh. Why is it that they always pick thieves to be the heroes and why does it look like Chris Pine's character is wearing a bad 80s leather jacket?

The only thing they did get right is the druid (hopefully it's a druid) shape changing into the owl bear. That and the mimic, which did make me laugh.

EDIT: they spelt 'honour' wrong in the title :p

It looks like silly fun. Hopefully it will be well-made silly fun, and genuinely enjoyable. That remains to be seen. They're certainly trying to tick all the D&D boxes, with mimics, owlbears, displacer beasts and all that kind of thing.

I do find that kind of not-very-funny quipping pretty tiresome. There's a kind of non-joke bathos (dragon crashes through wall breathing flames, hero says "Enough fire already") that I find especially weak (it's probably very easy to write). Red Notice was full of that kind of stuff, and as a result I felt nothing for any of the characters except annoyance. If you're going to attempt comedy, do a good job.

(I'm not sure if that is Zepplin, but if so I'm certain it's been doctored, probably to boost the bass.)

Im thinking and hoping that it will be two hours well spent at the movie theater. :)
