I'm not sure if the species' evolution was ever explained - how could an planet bound crustation thing develop a symbiotic relationship with an hyperspace jumping, biomechanical space ship? (I assumed the hand of some sort of 'lost' ancient galactic civilisation like whoever built all the Jump Gates in Babylon 5 or the monolith in 2001.)
