DISCUSSION THREAD -- 350 Word Writing Challenge #50 (July 2023)

paranoid marvin: This exciting medieval fantasy holds many surprises for its readers, from the way in which an adversary is depicted to its double twist ending. In addition to fine entertainment, it offers much food for thought regarding trust and honesty.

Well I'm in on the Challenge. At first I wondered how I would manage to write a story 350 words long, then after writing wondered how I could get it down to 350. Such is life.

@Yozh .... Awakenings .... This is a story which treads the boundary between a high tech S.F. story and a post-apocalyptic one where a single misstep can have disastrous consequences.

@paranoid marvin .... A Promise Kept .... This is a story that reminds us that revenge is a dish best served cold.

@Guttersnipe .... Howl of the Heart .... This is a story that explores the boundary between truth and myth, fact and fiction, love and lust.

Guttersnipe: This comic misadventure adds a touch of nostalgia to its drollery, causing the reader to think back fondly on old Hollywood. Appropriately, it captures the dryly madcap mood of classic screwball comedies.

@BigJ .... A promise made; a promise kept ,,,, A story that explores the depth true love will go.

BigJ: An apocalyptic event is examined through the emotions of ordinary individuals in this heartbreaking tale of loss. By focusing on the experiences of a few rather than many, the author allows us to truly understand the impact of disaster.

@Luiglin .... Paronomasia .... A story that had me groaning along with the Dark Lord, and more seriously considering the fate of glaciers.

I am enjoying the entries so far - there are certainly some very imaginative ideas amongst them. I had something I thought interesting too but initial efforts need way too many words and even the extra fifty are unlikely to enable me to make it workable. Back to the drawing board I think.

My only ideas have been stories about the last glacier or remembering the last glacier, neither of which I want to write.

@johnnyjet .... Skating Away on the Thick Ice of a New Day .... A surprising adventure story which is true to the picture.

@Phyrebrat .... Under Starlight .... A haunting story (in the best way) which leaves me wondering what happened.

"It is evident that johnnyjet is an author of thrilling tales of adventure, not unlike your associate Doyle. And unless I miss my guess, I detect an allusion to an agriculturist of the Eighteenth Century."

"From Phyrebrat we obtain evidence that a north wind, as well as an east wind, may be cold and bitter."

Since my last 300-worder was literally inspired by the image, I decided to go deeper this time. Teeth came to mind, but my first attempt was missing something (it was spookier but not emotional). The second attempt came from the Soul and, though maybe it isn't wildly creative, it just felt right :giggle: I'm super thankful for those 50 extra words, too!
