Best Horror Short Story Collection

S&S certainly is worthwhile, although I was so young that I couldn't get the fullness of my bro's REH books......but fortunately for me, I had Conan & Kull comics, which dumbed them right down for me!

TY for all the suggestions & insights, they are much appreciated. I am somewhat familiar with Bra Mac Morn & Solomon Kane, as the Savage Sword of Conan magazine did 'Worms of Earth' and some SK in the back pages in the 70's. I remember them being awesome indeed. In fact, 'worms' is one of the stories in the 'Horror of REH' book, maybe I'll read that one first.

Worms of the Earth is a terrific story , you love it. Interestingly Karl Edward Wagners novel Bran Man Morn The Legion Form the Shadow is a sequel to Howard's story and a very worthy follow up too. :) It was published by Zebra Publication ( long since defunct) around 1976 .

Oh and speaking of REH, I've just gotten 'The Horror Stories of REH' and there are several stories in there that I would've thought were S&S, but listed here under horror. Labels. Oh well.

BAYLOR Are there any Kane short stories that you would recommend?

Thank you much! Will keep an eye out for them (though not too far out, just sort of laying against my cheek).

Some excellent suggestions, I am particularly interested in REH at the moment, good call there! I have 'the horror stories of reh' on the way, looking forward to that one.

Funny you mention gg pan - if I was forced to name the one story that has the most seriously ominous atmosphere I've ever experienced, it would be this story. Funny, I can't really put a finger on why it affects me so much - weird.

Thanks for the suggestions, will check them out!

The Great God Pan was the very story I ever read by Arthur Machen and yes in totality , it's an incredibly unsetting story, Every word , every sentence is sufficed with menace . it's a great story and I can understand why Lovecraft liked it .

His episodic novel The Three Imposters. is a very weird and interesting read. The book starts with bespectacled man on the run dropping a coin. and the this book down a very weird macabre and episodic path. It's a very strange read.

His Novel The Hill of Dreams Its not horror and not quite like anything else he wrote. In part , it about about young man named Lucian Taylor who is trying to write what things is he perfect novel. It's a very whimsical novel and Machen seems to leave it up to the reader to decided what it's all about.:(
