Twitter’s replacement

So much to complain about regarding X but I can't do that here (the biggest injustice being when he quite suddenly revoked third-party access to dedicated platform APIs and thousands of small businesses relying on them couldn't afford to continue - even some willing to pay him $42,000 a month!)

I only wanted to point out that there are already "Lists". Very few people ever seemed to use Twitter Lists, but if you create your own private Lists with only the people you want to see included, and then only look at those, you won't see any adverts either (of course, I've no doubt this loophole will be closed at some point, if Lists themselves don't get removed entirely.)

Rather than move to Threads, Blue Sky, Mastodon or anything else, I think it's time to step back a little. There is still much on X that you see before the mainstream news catches up, and often more nuanced detail, but there is also much unsubstantiated gossip and outright lying, with far poorer moderation. It's a really just a sewer now.
I, too, rely heavily on lists. But my tolerance (or should I say lack there of) is fast reaching critical stage. BlueSky is good but not great for those of us who follow journalists.
I also have a few BlueSky codes should anyone want one.

Suddenly it seems everyone is moving to BlueSky.

One thing I would never have predicted is that SFFChronicles, where I've been for 24 years (since before it even began [but that's another story]) would outlast Twitter, where I've been for 11 years. After building a 40,000+ following (twice - once before melon bought it, and then again until last week) I'm not leaving yet (maybe on Jan 19th) but it's definitely going to crash and burn, so I think I deserve a ringside seat to watch that happen. Numbers are now in freefall. As I mentioned, I use Lists and Blocking to control (mainly) what I see, and never paid for any blue tick or such, but my red flags would have to be the removal of the Block and the possible merge with Trust Social.

Most people who are going someplace else, are shouting loudly about going to Bluesky but Threads is definitely another destination for others. Mastodon isn't mentioned any longer at all. I think many are just leaving social media entirely, or keeping to Facebook and Instagram. (The community group that I represent will most likely do this.) I will be deactivating my X personal account and I never really used Facebook, Instagram or Threads in a personal capacity anyway.

Twitter, IMO, is still the best of them
Still by far the biggest of them, and when it was Twitter it certainly was the best.

The way that X is going in the last two weeks, there'll only be us left. And it wasn't so political when it was Twitter. It was more like SFFChrons, as you could have decent conversations and an exchange of ideas without any rudeness, where there were funny memes, and you could actually learn stuff. Now it is very, very political and divisive, full of unwanted adverts, especially those for fake goods, and full of AI bots, naked exhibitionists, proselytising, swearing, climate change denial, anti-vaxers, crypto scams, Russian trolls, edgelords, tech bros, fake news and damned lies. And the rest is just spam!

I use a plug-in called Tweak New Twitter which only shows posts or retweets from those you follow, and keeps much of the old Twitter branding and design. No ads. It was great for a while (though not as good as before), but most of those I follow have now gone. I don't know if I can be bothered with a replacement.

Not my experience and it's still a fun and lively place to interact. Musk has opened things up compared to the previous regime, which has certainly caused some angst among a lot of users, but I expect the fuss will settle down after a while and business as usual will resume.

I'm on Bluesky, though, so I'll hedge my bets :giggle:

Just joined Bluesky after reading this thread (have @Phyrebrat, @Jo Zebedee & @The Big Peat on follow -not sure how to find others though) -will give it time. Twitter had been okay for finding folk to create with, but it has really fallen apart for me over the last year ...sorta like the Smiths lyrics 'the music that they constantly play says nothing to me about my life'. Every time I log on there is a pile of posts under Elon Musk agreeing with random (to me) irrelevant gibberish -might be some way of tweaking it to make it better but I get the feeling the site is for the bin anyway.
