DISCUSSION THREAD -- February 2024 -- 75 Word Writing Challenge

Congratulations! Your Honor. I was almost sure you were going to win from the moment I read your story. It's wonderfully imaginative.

Many congratulations, and apologies for being away from the computer for a week so I could not vote.

Finishing things up:

Christine Wheelwright: Roses are red, violets are blue; what matter the difference between me and you?

M. Robert Gibson: Roses are red, violets are blue; victory comes from acts of derring-do.

Ursa major: Roses are red, violets are blue; hope for the best is what one must do.

Big J: Roses are red, violets are blue; tales in verse you must not eschew.

Luiglin: Roses are red, violets are blue; there's no place like home is a saying that's true.

The Judge: Roses are red, violets are blue; not just fine work, but the big winner, too!

Congratulations @The Judge!

I didn't expect to get much attention this month because I didn't feel I'd hit either the genre or the prompt. So it was gratifying to get some mentions and nice comments, thank you for those!

I have my computer back now, with my original version. The two versions are quite similar. I think the original had slightly more natural language, but the version posted was tighter, so it could include one more cycle and I like that repetition.

It reminds me that when I was a teenager I used to make second drafts of writing projects by opening a new file and rewriting everything from scratch. I just don't have that time and patience these days! Perhaps I should suck it up and do it anyway.

Congratulations to The Judge! It's not often that a poetical entry wins the Challenge.

Really happy with how I did personally, and massive thanks to johnnyjet, Luiglin and Bren G for your votes and to CC, The Judge, M. Robert Gibson, Starbeast, Elckerlyc and Bowler for your shortlistings.

If I'd had the extra words, it would have turned out that the Prince hadn't actually drunk the 'love at first sight' potion, and my inspiration for him was the wonderfully jmagined 'Prince Charming' from Shrek.

Congratulations, The Judge! And well done all... another good Challenge. Looking forward to March.

On just a personal note that has nothing to do with anything... I joined Chrons way back in March of 2014 in part because I wanted to enter the Challenges. They seemed like so much fun, and there was such a great sense of camaraderie amongst the participants (there still is, I think).
I set myself a (crazy seeming) goal of entering every 75 Word Challenge for ten years, back then, and this month I realized that goal. I've just entered what I think is my 120th straight 75 worder. Seems mad, now that I consider that number of tiny stories. I think there are a few other long entry-streaks out there... and maybe another few a couple of years in. But anyway, thanks for the fun over the years, everyone, and see you in March, CC

Thanks, everyone!

And particularly Fascinated Centaur Thanks for the lovely shortlistings Elckerlyc and Starbeast, and Passionate Unicorn In Love Thanks for the wonderful votes CC and ninja-ing ZroSkreed!

I really didn't expect much attention for my versifying -- please don't anyone call it a poem or poetry!! -- but I thought there might be some comment about the title, which really tickled me. In case it's gone over most people's heads, it's a riff off Destry Rides Again, the comedy Western starring James Stewart, in which Marlene Dietrich plays the saloon chanteuse, Frenchy, and the song See What the Boys in the Back Room Will Have was written for her character in the film.

Congratulations to the Judge and apologies to all for not casting my votes in time. I kept meaning to set aside time to read all of the stories and never found the time. I will have a read through on my commute home and post my shortlist.

but I thought there might be some comment about the title, which really tickled me.
I'm a huge fan of Jimmy Stewart (he and Cary Grant are probably my favorite actors), and I've seen Destry Rides Again a few times... I remembered that Ms. Dietrich sang in the movie, and figured your story must all connect with that, TJ. But I wasn't confident enough about my thoughts to mention the song.
Your stories are always so well written, and clever, and this one had a winning charm to it that pulled me in. :)

Obviously, my story was "inspired" by the Des and Tiny pun, but the nature of the story (the Princess being the payment for help in a war, having beeen bartered for that help) suggested the title...

...and there's an inadvertent pun in there, one that I did not myself notice until the day after I posted my entry.

The Bartered Bride is a comic opera (one with a quite well-known overture) by the Czech composer, Bedřich Smetana**. In my story, the Princess is, to her surprise, smitten (whether this involves magic or not is up to the reader), so one could say that the Dwarf Lord has... er... smitten her....

** - Just so you know (and nothing to do with stories or puns), smetana is the anglicised name of a type of soured cream from Central and Eastern Europe.

Congratulations The Judge
@The Judge

A gargantuan WELL DONE to everyone who participated.

My Story: I recalled an illustration I did a few decades ago showing a dragon and knight's horse lovingly embracing each other. So I created dialogue which was inspired by February's challenge.

Well done @The Judge

Thanks for the unexpected vote @Yozh
and thanks for the mention @johnnyjet

As for my entry, back in February 2020 the genre was Romantic Fantasy and my entry was The Red Knight

This time around I thought I'd try 'an origin story' of the Red Knight

No doubt the next time Romantasy comes up, I'll probably be doing a sequel  ;)
