Annoying spelling, galling grammar, irksome words, frustrating phrases

"Showcase" for "show".

"Epicentre" for "centre".

I don't mind language changing, but when longer words with specific meanings replace perfectly cromulent terms, that's annoying.

Hm, I would see those as related words but not with same meaning.

Showcase: A presentation with the purpose to highlight something. "The implement dealer had a showcase of his best selling tractors."
Show: A presentation with the purpose of entertaining. "The local elementary school produced a talent show."

Epicenter (epicentre for the King's English): the precise origin of something, possibly but not necessarily the middle of it. "The epicenter of the demonstration was a young woman who had been trafficked.
Center (sigh! centre) a place or location. "The local recreation center has a treadmill for sale."

Showcase: A presentation with the purpose to highlight something. "The implement dealer had a showcase of his best selling tractors."
Show: A presentation with the purpose of entertaining. "The local elementary school produced a talent show."

I forgot these are both nouns as well -- I actually meant them as verbs. I've heard numerous (intelligent) YouTube presenters say things like "This showcases the company's inability to react to market demands".

Another one I was reminded of this morning: "singular" instead of simply "single".

I hadn't thought of them as verbs. Although I most certainly have heard them used as such. My linguistics education would likely term those as over-urbanizations.
