An Awfully Bad Way to Go

All things come to an end.

That's what they used to say. Before Spirit offered us a way to live on, in the body of another.

Now, those rich enough to find someone, pay them off… they don't end. They go on and on, and get richer and richer… actually maybe it didn’t change much after all.

Wait, I got it wrong. All good things come to an end. That was it. How insufferably English.
 
Denouement - A Life in Five Genres
At 50, her life story was long past Young Adult with its ending of hope and determination.​
Then she met him. Suddenly her story was Romance; her ending could only be Happy Ever After.​
When he borrowed her life savings to escape rogue CIA agents, she thought her story Spy Fiction. The ending would be his vindication.​
Then she discovered he’d conned other women. Her story was True Crime.​
His ending was a Murder Mystery.​
 

Immortality Attained


“We lack immortality only because of what kill us,” Luscombe had said, long long ago. “Remove them all and we can, we will, be immortal.”
And so it proved. Diseases were eliminated by their causes being eliminated, and other threats to life too.
There were problems and side effects, but Luscombe survived…
…by ridding himself of the last and greatest threat: other humans.
“Your turn,” said the AI that had made it all possible.
“Damn!”
 

The End Game​

2842’s Intergalactic Chess Championship was held remotely via EtherZoom due to the Sigma pandemic.

Kaspov knew he had defeated his alien nemesis, and was considering the means of checkmate; the precision of a knight or blunt instrument of a rook.

Only when he saw his little green opponent celebrating did he realise. His dismal failure to account for the effects of dark matter on relativity had led to him timing out. At least in Andromeda.
