New F1 Podcast - Undercutters

Tiny bit ill lately but I don't think you can tell.

Anyway, here's Undercutters Episode 6: The Sixthening, covering rule and calendar changes, the woe that is the sprint race, and a smidgen of news:

Trying to decide when to do a 2025 predictions episode. Before or after testing?

As much as it's tough on Doohan, I agree on your logic regarding Colapinto. As for Bartoleto, I agree it's likely he will have a slow car but, then again, so will his more experienced team mate. I don't think this is a situation where you count points as a success. I'd argue that if he is regularly within half a second of Hulkenburg, I'd class that as a successful season. He does have one thing that might help him - his vastly experienced manager (Alonso). I'm sure there will be lots of advice heading his way.

As for the rest, no arguments from me. I wouldn't bet against your ranking. Ocon always seems to rile his team mates and other drivers so it will be interesting to see how Bearman deals with the situation.

It'll also be interesting to see how Haas handle it. While Hulkenberg and Magnussen had beef in the past, both were experienced and mature enough not to let it make things difficult. Ocon is a good driver, and Bearman to beat him is my most 'out there' forecast so far, but the younger driver looked very good in two different cars last year.

On points as the metric: I had to pick some means of measurement and that was the easiest to have a clear right/wrong prediction. As you'll've gathered, I do think Bortoleto has a good chance of looking like one of the better rookies but his car will stop him grabbing many headlines (probably).

Not much I'd disagree with but I'll just say this about Hamilton. He might surprise everybody. To me, he simply has to have a good 2025. If he doesn't then the critics will point to his decline in 2024 and Russell beating him in the qualification battles. They will then say it is on-going. It seemed to me when Hamilton was quizzed on this last year that he was struggling to maintain his morale and seemed to suffer some self-doubt, and perhaps this led to his 'not as fast anymore' comment'. Self doubt can be a corrosive thing. He needs a good start and then to maintain that performance through the season like never before. If he can do this, he just might come out on top.

When it comes to Aston Martin I'm hoping to see a late season surge. My reasoning is quite simple. By then the wind tunnel should be fully operational and Newey (who doesn't start with the team until the first of March) as well as concentrating on the 2026 car has stated that his remit will also be looking at the reasons why so many upgrades have not worked in previous seasons. I won't be looking for the team to suddenly emerge as title contenders but just some positives that can be built on in the 2026 season.

One thing that Newey said that struck me was that in most teams, around 75% of upgrades don't work. If that's the case, then even a slight improvement might bring significant changes to the team's fortunes.

I think Hamilton will have a great 2026. Beating Leclerc is going to be difficult in 2025, the Monegasque might be faster as is. With Hamilton in a new team, with a regulation era that hasn't suited him, I think Leclerc's got this.

Episode 9: wondering if the season will live up to the hype. After this, there'll be a single podcast covering testing, in early March, then Tuesdays for race previews and reviews:

I'd settle for a tasty 2025. It doesn't have to be an absolute classic - just a bit of good healthy competition will do me fine:)

Yeah, my guess is it'll be narrower than 2024 but that might make the title race better. Norris was pretty unlucky to have so many rivals. If it had just been him and Verstappen, with the Red Bull 3rd or 4th fastest, it would've been easier for the McLaren driver.

Undercutters Ep11, the Australian Grand Prix preview, is up now :) A look back at the most recent races, plus how the pecking order seems to be, predictions at the sharp end (plus midfield points and an extra prediction), and, of course, F1 news.

Undercutters Ep12 is a double episode both looking back at the Australian Grand Prix and ahead to the Chinese Grand Prix. Australia was pretty interesting as a lot of drivers had either a very good or very bad weekend. I don't think many will feel so-so about how things went.

Also, for those who like pretty pictures, there are a couple in the transcript, which is where (alongside social media) I'll post such things. I didn't expect the first Constructors' graph of the year to have Sauber ahead of Ferrari, but there we are.

Episode 13 reviews the Chinese Grand Prix weekend, including the sprint. Very mixed bag for Ferrari, Tsunoda's strategy team continue to be his greatest adversary, and Piastri has a very good time closing the gap on Norris.

Episode 14 has a preview and predictions for the Japanese Grand Prix. Little thinner as there's only one real piece of news, Tsunoda and Lawson swapping. It was interesting when reviewing the last two races concisely to see that tyre wear caused by early pit stops affected both. My guess is this is bad news for Racing Bulls given they've gotten strategy at both races so far.

I'm looking forward to seeing how Tsunoda handles the step up. My guess, given his temperament, is that he'll either crash or do pretty well. I don't see anything in between:)

Yeah, the range of possibilities is all the way from podium to DNF. And there's a chance of rain in the race.

I was looking at the weather situation for Japan this time of year. It seems April often has a bit of light rain but nothing too heavy. This will be interesting from a race point of view because it could mean difficult tyre choices - possibly too dry for inters and too slick for dry.
