Aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth has officially affiliated with Cunard’s Queen Mary 2. Some folk might be wondering why. The reason lies in history. The merchant fleet has always been a strong wartime component of the UK’s navy. The previous Queen Mary liner acted as a troop ship in WW2 and even as recent as the Falklands War, victory could never have been achieved without the aid of merchant ships with P&O’s SS Canberra transporting the Parachute Regiment and Royal Marines to the conflict zone. In a time of war, these civilian ships may be called upon again so I think it’s good to form a strong bond between the merchant and military wings of Britain’s ships.
