Fredric Brown

born Cincinnati, Ohio: 29 October 1906
died Tucson, Arizona: 11 March 1972

Fredric Brown was an American writer of science fiction, fantasy, detective, mystery and horror, and of non-fiction, and a former proof-reader

He is known for his use of humour, his postmodern outlook, and especially for his mastery of the short story, particularly those of the very “short short" form. In the early years of the science fiction genre, and at the time of his first short story in 1941, his works had an elegant, polished writing that was rarely seen then. Many of his stories suggest a supernatural explanation, only to have a straighter ending.

Notable among his novels and short stories are Martians Go Home (1955), The Waveries (1945), The Fabulous Clipjoint (1947), Answer (1954, The Lights in the Sky Are Stars (1952) and Arena (1944). Arena was used in creating the episode of Star Trek: TOS in which Kirk fights the Gorn.

He is an author who is regularly mention in our SFF Chronicles Book Search threads, which suggest that in his SF writing, he is best remembered for his short stories.
