C. J. Cherryh, is an American writer of science fiction and fantasy, hard SF, and space opera. She writes novels, short stories and essayist, and was a high school teacher. She has written at least 80 books.

She wrote from a very early age but could not get published until she met Donald A. Wollheim in 1975. Two of her novels were both published in 1976, Gate of Ivrel and Brothers of Earth. From 1979, she began to write full-time.

She is best known for her Alliance–Union universe, which began with the novel, Downbelow Station (1981); for the Chanur novels, beginning with The Pride of Chanur (1982); for the Foreigner series, beginning with Foreigner (1994), and for Cyteen (1988) from her Unionside series.

Her works depict fictional worlds which are believable and realistic through their well-researched histories, languages, psychology, and archaeology. They have themes of First Contact, interstellar travel, alien cultures, revenge, redemption, betrayal and space pirates. She often has strong female protagonists.

She is another author whose work frequently appears in answers to queries within the SFF Chronicles Book Search forum.
