Book Hauls!

The top floor of Booths books, Hay on Wye.

Booths Books in Hay... A few years ago, they used to have two long shelvings (about 15 yards) in the basement and entirely dedicated ti Fantasy and science fiction. I found a few Jack Vance and other favorites in there. Could easily spend an afternoon and quite a few quids in that shop alone.

Those shelves are still there and loaded with old pulps. Did not photograph them unfortunately.

I do not want to go there.

I want to be there.

(And that in spite of expecting I would ram my knee against that fire extinguisher.)

Na. Too tidy. where's the fun? This is what good book hunting should look like:

Voltaire and Rousseau in Glasgow.

I was in there the other day. I only bought three books as I was pressed for time. 3 SF mags from 1965, 1957 and 1962. The 1965 one replaces a slightly more worn copy in my collection which is heading to eBay and will pay for the other two - it contains Terry Pratchett's second published story. Ching!

After 20 years of looking for an affordable copy I picked up Brigands of the Moon. It is the Canadian version where they screw up in a big way. They credit the editor, John W, Campbell, as the author.Ray Cummings is the author.
This caused the publisher to pull and pulp most of the copies. The awful cover art doesn't stop people from asking three figures for this book. I was able to pick it up in a book lot, 14 books for 25$.

What a piece of luck! I spent years looking for certain children's books and finally had to pay quite a bit for fairly scruffy copies. Not three figures individually but it did amount to that for the four of them. But I remember the elation when I finally tracked down each one.

The Man in the High Castle by Folio
The binding is very tight, not exactly mouse trap (as comic book fans would say), but it won't lay flat.
Didn't have that problem with other books from the same publisher.
Other than that, very nice book, some images:

Thank you Vince W!

Latest arrival is from the past
In search for The Science Fiction Foundation magazine on ebay i stumbled upon a seller with huge amount of similar stuff.
And bought Thrust magazine instead, a blind buy, i think he was running them back in the days.

I got a bug bite recently for vintage magazines, curious little time capsules.
Editorial is interesting, but i can't yet link to outside images.

Found this on sale at a local bookstore yesterday, cost $7.49 new:

Went to online to see if volumes 2 and 3 were available at Amazon and found the one I just got going for a shade under $35! What the heck, couldn't have timed it better, I guess.

Favorite book sale of the year, the one that benefits the Grimlets' High School (well, Grimlet the Younger, anyway; Grimlet the Elder is a sophomore in college now ).

Picked up Patricia Wrede's Enchanted Forest Chronicles, or at least the first 3 books, anyway:

Dealing with Dragons
Searching for Dragons
Calling on Dragons

They look to be predominantly YA...I've heard good things about Wrede, and the price was right.

Also picked up Talking Man, by Terry Bisson. Purely a case of interesting cover and blurb. Know absolutely nothing about Bisson or this book, but for 50 cents what's the worst that can happen?;)

Got the Lovecraft both for the Robert Bloch introduction and the great selection of titles in one creepily attractive volume making this the perfect choice for the Halloween season.

The Mutants cost only a quarter, believe it or not. Great find by a great but largely forgotten writer of sf.

The Phantom Bandit is a collection of stories mostly from the forties. Found it in one of those roadside libraries sprouting up all over the place. Really good shape for a freebie.[/URL]
