Tamora Pierce

I definately liked the Alanna/George pairing a lot better than if she had married Jon... she wouldn't have made a very good queen, and Jon seemed almost too cocky near the end of Song of the Lioness... Thayet really calmed him down...

I've read the Song of the Lioness and the Immortals series. I thought they were enjoyable, light reads.

You might like the Pellinor series by Alison Croggan. The first book is The Naming (U.S.) or The Gift (U.K.).

So far I have only read The Immortals Series but I loved it. I heard there is going to be a series or book something like that about Numair in 2010. About his early life. I wish there was a book or series about Numair and Daine's marriage and wedding, but I don't think there is, I think there is a little bit about it like they are married and have kids, I heard that it is in The Protector of The Small series but idk cuz I have only read The Immortals Series cuz I didn't know it was the 2nd series in the Tortall world books. But I am getting the other books in the Tortall world books.

Sorry if I'm dragging up an old thread.
I started to read the Protector of the Small series in year 5. Since then I have read all of the Tortall and Circle books.
I must say that the Alanna series is by far my favourite, then it is a tie between the first Circle series and the Ali series.

The Beka Cooper book, I didn't enjoy as much as I thought I would, perhaps that is just because I am older now though. I found Will of the Empress almost as good at the Lioness series, despite the fact that I was a few years older when I read it.

Also, sorry for dragging up an old thread. :D

The Alanna quartet was the first fantasy I've read. I was around 11, if I remember right, maybe 12. I'd borrowed them from a local library.
Oh, how I loved these books. When I was 14, I read them again and still loved them.
And now over 10 years later, I just ordered them a few weeks ago (in english this time), to possess the books myself finally and to read them again. Alanna, is still my favourite character in fanatasy, and I think this will never change . However, the kind it was written, disappointed me a little, the books are very short, and I'm missing all the details, which give a book the depth.

Nonetheless, I ordered the Immortals quartet and I'm looking forward for it to arrive :) I read once the first two books of it, but can't remember that much of it any more.

I'm positive I will also order myself all the other books that there are from Tamora Pierce.

What do you mean by this?

I'm also looking forward to buying the books at some stage when I have money (soon!)
They were almost the first fantasy for me, but they really kept me reading. I think I could re-read them at any age and still enjoy them.

So, Melting Stones has recently come out, has anyone read it yet?
My friend has it and is going to give it to me when he finishes reading it (hopefully tomorrow - he was soooo close tonight)
It follows Evvy and Rosethorn, but that's about the extent of what I know.

Got it this morning, finished it tonight, and it was good, but not as good as most of her other books. I think I prefer all the books with knights and battles rather than mages. It's more romantic...

I haven't gotten Stones yet, but I think her books have fallen off somewhat in recent years. It seems to me that she's shifted from character focus to 'issue' focus, and that's taken the edge off. They're still very readable, but not as compelling as they have been.

I agree with that, Alanna is my absolute favourite of the lot. It may be because I've gotten older though. I was 10 or 11 when I first read them and I'm almost 16 now, so it may be that, but I still enjoy them.

I'm currently reading the Immortals quartet, which are the adventures of Daine. (I'm half through Emporer Mage). First: The story is absolut lovely as was Alanna's adventures. I like the plot and I like the characters.
However I have the same problem as I had with The Song of the Lioness. I'm missing the depth, it's somewhat emotionless. Pierce looses herself too much in description of clothes and banalities. The first book was the worst, but as with Alanna the writing style improves from book to book. She's includes the emotion and feelings of the characters more and more.

All in all, I enjoy it very much. And I'm looking forward to read the adventures of Alanna's children.

My eldest is reading Melting Stones at the moment and has told me it is 'awesome'! I might have to start reading her books soon! :)

Oh yes, do. I find that I don't enjoy them as much now that I'm older, but they are still good.

Read The Song of the Lioness Quartet in 5 days during my summer holiday this year and I can now see why people compare my writing to that of Pierce. She writes just the sort of stories I loved most when I was in my teenage years. High magic content medieval fantasy with strong characters and a character who displays plenty of tenacity. If I'd read this when I was younger, I feel sure it would have rated very highly among my favourites. :)

Anyone who enjoyed my Darkweaver Legacy series will definitely enjoy Song of the Lioness.
