Who is the giant?

Both Aemon and Shae called a certain dwarf a giant...

If the theory of the OP is that they are protectors of Stark children, then Osha, Hodor, and Brienne should be added to the list.

If the shadows are threats, then Gregor is at or near the top of the list. But then Roose Bolton, Tywin, and Amory Lorch all let Arya slip through their fingers too.
 
Perhaps the shadows are not threats but are characters who will repent or come to aid the starks. This would include Sandor as he helped Sansa and Arya by teaching her about the gift of mercy. Jaime we learn is not such a bad fella and is now trying to reunite Catelyn's daughters by helping Brienne and giving her the sword. Along these lines Gregor doesn't seem like a likely canidate for the giant.

I'm thinking the giant might represent Bravos. Their sigil is the Titan which could be confused for the giant by Bran who is very young. In the Arya sample chapter that was on GRRM's site Arya passes under the Titan and notices that it is really hollow and filled with men. Also Arya's role will seem to bring her into a very high circle in Bravos, the coin and the words alone got her the captains cabin and free passage to Bravos. If she were to rise up very high in her order she may even command some of the strength of Bravos and use it to either avenge her family or help Dany conquer Westeros.

I thought about that a bit myself, Cercar, although I didn't bring the connection quite as far as you did. I've read a spoiler for a second Arya chapter, and I'm not sure that she'll be as integrated into the Braavosi as that, though... It's a very interesting idea. I'll be glad to see if it actually happens.

Why has no-one mentioned Greatjon Umber?
He was temporarily a threat to Robb, remember. And I think he is still alive... Right?
The Titan theory is a good one, though.
