I'm a bit ambivalent- loved most of the sci-fi, (particularly the Chanur series and Cyteen) but had great difficulty getting into the fantasy ones. Incidentally, if you have as much difficulty getting hold of books as I do, I've got "Rider at the gate" and "Clouds rider", and I doubt whether I'll ever read them again, and my bookshelves are again requiring a culling, so… (when I take them to the englishsecond hand bookshop here they give me credit for more books, rather than money. I've got lots of credit, but short of buiding a spacewarp into my bedroom I have to keep getting rid of books, however much it hurts.
And "Hammerfall" works perfectly well as a standalone.
