Who gets Dawn?

Dawn is pretty damn incredible sword according to all reports and then it suddenly disappears with the death of Dayne (who is described as the paramount knight according to Eddard Stark - who was almost killed by him)

So, if Dawn does come back in the hands of a knight, who will weild it? My guess is it will be a major character we are already familiar with.

I'd love for the Hound to get it, but then he is not part of the Dayne line is he? Could it be Jon? I'd trade Longclaw for Dawn I think.

Any other ideas?

According the the 'official' family stuff on this, Ser Wallace Chester married lady Alia Dayne and currently has Dawn in his possession

I wonder if that means that eventually we will see this Ser Wallace Chester become a major character?

His name is Wallace Chester. A major character could never be named Wallace Chester... well, he could if he was Walter Mitty's best friend.

But if he does show up, I'd like to see him like Wallace Shawn's character in The Princess Bride... Vizzini. But will that happen? Inconceivable!

I do not think that word means what you think it means.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

I thought Dawn was with the current Lord of Starfall, who was Ser Arthur's elder brother. But that doesn't work, does it, because Ned is the current Lord of Starfall. Perhaps he will inherit and weild it when he is knighted. Though he is knighted, isn't he? When he becomes a actual fighter, then, and not just a knighted squire...

In any case, I will have to have a browse through Westeros to refamiliarise myself before Feast.

Thats what I thought. Ned needs to grow a little bit more to weild Dawn. Speaking of Dawn, is the sword Valyrian steel? I know Eddard dreams of that fatefull day when 7 went up against 3 at the Tower of Joy (i think). The sword has a milkyness if I remember correctly.

No, it is unique in that it is made from a fallen star.

So, the question is what, if any, unusual properties will it have? Valyrian steel is death to others, but will Dawn be?

I get the feeling it's been confiscated as punishment for the House been very strong (for obvious reasons) Targaryen loyalists. I'm not sure Edric Dayne would be given it. I get the impression that as far as the current rulers are concerned that family was on the losing side of the revolt and as such, "to the victors, the spoils"

Put it this way - if you had Dawn would you have given it up?

That would be true, but I would have to think that King Robert would restore Dawn to the Dayne family. Robert had the tendeny to turn his enemies into friends, so long as they sweard fealty to him. Robert took Barristan the Bold to be his Lord Commander of the Kingsguard and Barristan did kill many of friends that Robert and Eddard had during the rebellion.

True, but Arthur Dayne died rather than yield.
I'm remembering the Dornish motto "Unbent, Unbowed, Unbroken" - doesn't sound like a kingdom keen on compromise - that's why under Robert the whole kingdom was virtually ostracised, as evident by the fact it's taken to book 4 before we get a POV from there.

Perhaps it already is in a POV or two.

Perhaps someone stole Dawn (cough... Varys... cough) and it found it's way into Melissandre's hands. What if the hilt had been changed and now Stannis was calling Dawn Lightbringer? Isn't that what the dawn does... bring the light?

I donno that Stannis has Dawn. I mena Dawn is a huge two-handed sword that Ser Arther Dayne wore on his back. Stannis's sword seems to be a "normal" long sword that he wears at his hip. Can't be the same sword.

I agree it's highly improbable, but I just like to toss around ideas.

What if Dawn was melted down and reforged as Ice was? Stannis got half and who got the other half? Ned? Gendry? Edric? Axell?

No, Dawn was returned by Eddard and given to the Daynes. Ashara then through herself into the see.

I read about Dawn somewhere and it never states that the heir of the Daynes get it. Only that the most worthy Dayne (of character or swordsmanship I do not know) can wield it. No one "took" it from them. They still have it. I read somehere else that not every generation of Daynes gets it either. If no one "worthy" of the blade is around for that generation then that gen gets skipped.

Its qualities were that it was forged from a fallen star, was pale as milkglass and was razor sharp. So sharp that when Jaime was dubbed, the slightest touch cut through his clothing and skin of his shoulder.

Oh, btw, I went to one of the links to see about this Chester of Greenshield guy having it, but though I found the coat of arms, I could not find anything about Dawn. Any help?

P.S. Aegon just linked me the info ... Wallace Chester is the wielder of Dawn and is married to Alia Dayne.

Err.... scratch that.... I just noticed he isnt married to her. He is her consort. That is puzzling then of why a non Dayne would wield it if he is just a consort. Is he that good of a person or swordsman? Or is it for politcal or favoring reasons???

P.S.S. Ok, ok ok .... Once again I just figured aomething out after posting....

This info is from the RP type game Blood of the Dragon and takes place decades before ASOIAF. So, either way ..... Dawn is still not being used by anyone mentioned in the books. Back to square one I guees.

Okay, there should be a statute of limitations on the duration for which I can be held accountable for stupid posts. That last post was two and a half years ago... the statute of limitations must have passed on that one, right?

The temptation to wildly speculate on Dawn is very strong... must resist posting something stupid...

Well, pure speculation on my part: An interesting theory though , in my opinion, is that the Daynes are somehow mixed up in this whole Targaryen baby switching theme. (Whether they knew of it or not). Sooooo .... That Ned Dayne could be Neds real kid who was switched for Lyannas or was switched with Willas or Asharas or Darkstar or Aegon or "Young Griff" etc etc... You can mix the order of whos who with whos who up like a chex mix bag I guess.

Points might be:

1. The Daynes have it still.

2. The sword Mopatis was speaking about in the Tyrion Spoiler I posted is not the Targaryen sword Blackfyre, but in fact Dawn.

3.Or that boy "Ned Dayne" is in possession of it.

4. One of those people up there that I named have it.
