sci-fi/horror?

To Walk the Night and The Edge of Running Water by William Sloane, reissued last year in an omnibus volume, The Rim of Morning.

Read the latter and enjoyed it more than I expected. Rereading the former and enjoying it much more than I did on first reading about 35 years ago. Back then I'd been reading Lovecraft who got to his cosmic wonder show rather quickly in a story so Sloane seemed pokey. Apparently, with age, I now can appreciate the gentle build-up, the gradual laying of his foundation. More so, maybe, I appreciate his prose. It's plain and direct, though it still has some personality -- or at least his narrator's have some personality -- that includes a bit of wry humor.
