Harry Potter vs Artemis Fowl

I think I will have to read it again now just to refreash my memory of it.

Wow, an old thread. I love the Artemis Fowl books. I wouldn't really compare them to Harry Potter; not because they aren't on the same level, but just that they are very different stories and writing styles. Unless we're comparing characters, and if that's the case I would say I enjoy them both, though I find Artemis a bit more intriguing.

Artemis is heaps better then Harry. Artemis has developed over the books where Harry has stayed at pretty much the same place.

Harry has stayed at pretty much the same place.

Apart from becoming insufferably moody in the later books. Sure, it's understandable that he gets angry about what he's going through, but he whines about it and shouts all the time and I just want to slap him!

Or maybe I just want to slap him anyway and this is just an excuse. :D

Yeah Hoopy. For me it began a little bit in Goblet, but in OotP I literally couldn't stand him. I think in HBP he was toned down a tad, but it still was ingratiating at times. There's a good possibility that it was intentional on Rowlings part, painting the image of the stereotypical teenager, etc. but it did turn several people off from the series.

Oh, Harry Potter needs a good slapping! I found all the characters increasingly hard to like after book 4, but I find the teenagers at church get hard to deal with once they get to 15, too...

I read book one of Artemis Fowl, and it just had really 'nasty' undertones I didn't like. It was rather cruel and vulgar, so I felt. I realise this makes me sound like my Mum, but oh well!

I'm not gagging to read the new HP, but I probably will make the effort, just to get some closure, but with AF, I found nothing in the first book to draw me to book two.

I will probably regret saying this, but I really think the AF books cater more to the male audience. I only say that because of the overwhelming number of women I know that simply couldn't get into the books. Granted there are some that definitely do, but most that I know can't make it past the first book. To Colfer's credit, as the story progresses you start to see the real depth in Artemis, and those undertones you were referring to begin to slacken as Artemis's humanity and morality start to become more predominant. But admittedly, he's definitely the archetypal anti-hero (which is another reason the boys love it; girls just wanna have fun, boys just wanna be bad [which makes me question the truth behind the Adam and Eve story])

I'm still anticipating the 7th HP book, but I'm not having delusional tremors over it. Surprisingly I'm more looking forward to what the author's of Spiderwick have planned next, what Cornelia Funke has planned for the next Inkheart and I'm looking forward to discovering some new authors this year, as there are a ton of new series hitting the market.

That's why I love Artemis more than Harry Potter...he's not your typical hero, I love how cunning and selfish he is in the first book! Yes, I also like when he starts changing later on and becoming friends with the fairies (it creates very good humour and great story lines when they start working with each other and bouncing off each other) but I still love when a bit of his dark side shows through now and then. Harry's just whiny and has a saving-people complex but Artemis is...just a dude! :D

And thanks, Maj, I definitely will! And it will give me so much satisfaction!

Just one thing I dislike about AF is the mindwipe stuff and what happens in that book afterwards. It is good in the next book how he remembers nothing and Butler does, I like that, mut before that book starts I dont like the end of the 3rd one. I dont know why.

Remember to warn when making spoilers Maji, for those who haven't read the books or haven't gotten to certain parts of the series yet.

Oh yeah... about that... People dont read my last post if you are planing on reading AF.

I've read Harry Potter and Artemis Fowl. I really like both of them. They make me feel different.

Harry Potter : I feel like I'm in the story maybe I'm Harry Potter!

Artemis Fowl : I feel like I'm watching a movie!! That's cool !

I started AF 5 yesterday and I am already half way through. Such an awesome book.

Hi, I have just started reading Artemis Fowl and the lost colony. I really am enjoying it! does anyone want ot set up a thread to discuss the book in its own right?

I ahve read Lost Colony before. I read it it two days the first time. I am just reading it again. You know they were going to get the guy who plays Malfoy in HP to play AF but he is two old now.

I hate how it is left at the end of Lost Colony. Arty is toooo powerful!! Other then that it leaves you wanting the next one.

Oh I'll makie an Arty thread and post the URL in here. Do that soon I will

the film is gonna suck i bet you
with the recent run of books to films they always cast the wrong people and the acting is always wooden
