So...there's an ancient prophecy of a person who will bring balance to the force...

This is the underlying premise for Episode 1 and rescuing little-boy Anakin.

However, overall, after 1-6, we have only one single Jedi left alive - Luke Skywalker.

Is this really the act of balance that was predicted?

Or was the prophecy misapplied completely?

There's always Princess Leah. ;)

I think the prophecy meant the 'Sith' will be destroyed, in which case it wouldn't be incorrect. With the Emperor and Dark Vadar gone, none of the Sith (at least, that we know of) remain. That's something that hadn't been seen for thousands of years.

I said:
Only one jedi, though - awful sense of balance!

Surely the birth of the Jedi started with one Jedi who trained others?

Is Luke training new Jedi restoring the balance???

Well, I think Vader DID restore the balance. The Jedi Order obviously had a mistaken definition of 'balance'. Before the events in Episode IV, there were two powerful jedi left on either side. Thereafter, several new things happened (in the Expanded Universe). But, in a way, balance WAS restored for a time.

Yes it's right. vader restoreed the balence because HE was the one who destroyed Sidious. Luke just convinced him to.

Well Luke was not the only Jedi to survive. Vergere also survived in a sense (expanded universe). Balance was never restored yea the power tilted to the Jedi once more but they were again hunted down later in the expanded universe.

Balance can only be restored when all is embraced including the darkside. That is what vergere teaches latter and Yoda knew that. But embracing the darkside is dangerous

Learning in Episode I, how many sith are there at a time? Only two. How many Jedi were there? Thousands. How do you bring balance? You equal the sides. I think the prophecy was valid enough for the movies. How many Jedi are left in Episode III? Only two (Obi-Wan and Yoda). At least, that's what I've gathered from the prophecy. So was Anakin fulfilling the prophecy? I believe he was.

Surely a yoda like charater would be smart enough to realise that...

I'm not sure that Lucas was...
"oooh, balance sounds kinda cool"

And if you want to talk about the expanded universe... didn't the emperor have clones....

..yes. Have clones, the Emperor did. Destroyed them, luke did also. Therefore, the chosen one, Luke is.

I expect they'll affect the balance in Mr Lucas's account at the bank....

But 1-6 are only two thirds of the whole. As far as I'm aware, Han and Leia's twins are established in the Star Wars universe (as is a wider academy for training, iirc) and I would expect that to be the focus of the final third - bringing the balance back.

For an individual to be balanced, half their time does not need to be spent being evil, so the Force to be balanced does not need the dark side to be complete.

Here's a problem I have with the whole concept of "balance": The Force is obviously divided into a light side and a dark side. This is usually interpreted as "good" and "evil". But if the Force must be balanced, the dark side can't truly be evil. It's purpose must be misunderstood. Why must there be evil in the world?

This whole prophecy thing messed up the story anyway. Exactly what is the prophecy, and how is it known to be important? Who made it? How long ago? Why do we not see any other prophecies in the entire series besides that one? I really think the whole concept of a single prophecy that all Jedi believe in creates problems.

I would say what Darth Sidious and Darth Vader did could be considered evil. Evil is here by choice.

Who says there is just one? Besides, those questions will be best answered in the Old Republic trilogy starting in 2020. Hey...a guy can hope, right?
