Compare and constrast Zoo City by Lauren Beukes, where people who have committed an immoral/criminal act get a familiar, an animal that they must have near them (within 10s of Metres) at all times. They also get some kind of psychic/magical ability. For example, the MC has the power to find things that have been lost.
The reason for this isn't really explained in the book, it is a Deus Ex Machina of sorts.
If the Familiar dies, then the person to which it is attached also dies.
It's also an interesting take/metaphor for aparthied (as the book is set in South Africa and the author is from South Africa). Those that have committed heinous crimes or sins are easily identifiable, as they must always have their animal with them - they are segregated into their own communities - Zoos.
