Terry Goodkind

where did i say richard was tortured twice? i don't remember saying that, or even reading that.

and im not really going to discuss this anymore, or go back and reply to things made to things that i said. i really don't care. i have my opinion of goodkind and his characters, i've said what that is, i really disagree with contrary opinions, but that's my choice, as it is your choice to have them :)

the following is part of a post you made last june

richard's rape and torture (two times i remember him being tortured) is nothing compared to the gang rape at the school, the sex with the monsters, the threat of rape to kahlan, the rape of her sister. two violent acts against one man, compared to the several against all the women. it doesn't balance particularly, in my mind

if he wasnt tortured twice that's not a problem....i have missed a couple of books and wondered where the second session occurred that's all....no need to get your wings in a twist

In my case it's a severe dislike. This derives from a personal encounter with him at my store. He belittled one of my employees and wanted to know why I wasn't putting his second book in the front window. My response was we haven't sold more than two or three in the 2 months it had been out. He was wearing an ankle length leather coat in 90 degree weather. His self important demeanor actually drove away my staff so that I handled the collecting of his books by myself. I was put off by his attitude and haven't read him since.
The only other author to have engendered such a negative reaction was Depak Chopra who refused to acknowledge anyone and wouldn't even speak to me except through his publicist. This is with me standing in front of him.

The picture on the inside back cover of his books makes him seem like he thinks a lot of himself.

And I saw an interview on some American book program with him... and he was so full of himself! "In most ways, Richard is me, and does what I should do, and what is the right thing to do."

Still, I devour his books with a relish. I can't wait for the final one in the Chainfire Trilogy/Sword of Truth series.

AH i remember where he was tortued twice! once bu that little girl whose teeth he kicked in, and the other by the mord sith bondage lesbian women! so yeah. twice.

my wings weren't twisted. i was just asking where i'd said that, cos i couldnn't remember saying it, or where he was tortured twice. now i can :) once by a kid, once by those bondage women. not in the same book,i think.

He was tortured by the Mord Sith in Wizards First Rule, wasn't it? Or the second one.

I can't think of where he was tortured by the little girl... unless you mean Violet in Phantom.

no. when he was tied up, and she said she'd have kahlan raped, and he kicked her teeth in. i was told she was a little girl, and im sure it was seperate from when he was tortured by the mord sith. i could be wrong. it all blurred toegher into one horrible waste of my time in the end! :) but im sure it was two seperate occassions. the mord sith was later, i thought, just before he then became their leader.

in many ways my main character is me, too. im a bit scared byu the idea that he is like richard though. richard does some things that i don't think are the right thing to do. kicking in kid's teeth and killing innocent bystanders for one! the right thing to do is subjective. it's really arogant of him to say that there is a right and wrong thing. i know what i think is right and wrong, but other people may disagree.

sigh.

I'm suffering from the same thing, methinks. :p

He was tortured by Denna in book two - Stone of Tears. And becomes Lord Rahl in the next one, Blood of the Fold.

I'm pretty sure that it's Violets teeth he kicks in... but it isn't in Phantom. Though it does talk about Richard's first meeting with Violet and how he kicked her teeth in... their first meeting (or so Wikipedia so reliably tells me), is in Wizards First Rule.

Which makes sense as Rachel joins with Chase and attempt to journey home, and I don't think we hear from them again until Phantom.

Oh it's too confusing sometimes. Anyone care to confirm any part of the matter? :p

-----

I never really thought about Goodkind as being arrogant until I saw the interview. The way he speaks, and what he actually says reminds me of one of these American preachers who don't think they're right, but KNOW it.

well there you are then. two torture ish situations. denna in book two, violet in book one. anything after book 4 i hav eno idea about as i quit there and then :)

arrogance alone is enough to put me off reading someone's work. even if it was the bees knees (or cat's meow) or whatever of the writing world, just knowing the author was full of themselves would make me not want to bother.

Oh... go ahead, burst the bubble. :(

But was Richard captured and tortured by Denna in the first, or second book?

thank you everybody for your input,.. i will do some research and try to confirm where the second torture scene came from.....as for faery queen, thanks for responding again....and i think your wings are beautiful

Personally, I'm glad that we will finally see the ending to this series. I've been anxious since Phantom and want to see what happens. I don't like it when people spoil a novel when you haven't read it. And yes some of the books are rather boring: e.g. Soul of the Fire, Pillars of Creation, and Blood of the Fold, but that comes with any series you read. The people who Hate this series haven't taken the time to read it and then Think about what they've read. They are too quick to judgment saying that the story is total baloney. I just don't like to see an excellent series get trashed. Anyway, what are your thoughts on the final novel, Confessor?

I personally can't wait for it. I've loved every single one in the series, and am looking forward to seeing how it ends up... though methinks I'll need to read the Chainfire trilogy from the start again to remind myself what happened.

Also, end of Phantom - was anyone else thrown by the sudden fast forwarding of time by however many months? One moment he's a-fighting, the next moment it's at the end of the book, and months after the fighting.

Now either I switched off and missed out a few hundred pages, or Goodkind got lazy and rushed the finish.

Hmm..I'm not sure if Terry got lazy or maybe he wanted to get all of his thoughts out and onto the table but didn't include as much details?? I don't know...but it was indeed very odd. It's like you were here and then you're there. I had to actually go backwards and make sure what I read was right. lol. Still it was an excellent novel.

I've certainly thought on the story as a whole after spending many years with the books. I'm currently through Chainfire, and will complete them at some point when I can get them used.

And all I can say is instead of television's "jumping the shark", maybe we should refer to a fantasy series as having "demonized the chicken".

I have no idea if that will make sense to those outside of the US.

I just had a thought. Does anyone know of another site I could purchase one for a realitively low cost? I do know it is Keith Parkinson but unfortunately he's passed on. I've tried his official website but don't see any prints there. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
