GRRM posted this on his Update page of his website.

A DANCE WITH DRAGONS will feature all the characters that you (and I) missed in A FEAST FOR CROWS. Jon, Tyrion, Davos, Dany, and Bran will all be present with major storylines, and toward the end of the novel Arya will appear as well, as will Asha Greyjoy. There will also be one new viewpoint character debuting and one old returning, giving me a total of nine POVs, plus the usual prologue.

I'd like to guess (and I want you to guess also) as to who will will be the new POV and who will be the returning POV.

The New:
Since the events of ADWD are supposed to shed light on what is happening away from King's Landing, South and Central Westeros, and the Iron Islands, I'd say the POV must be about The Wall, North Westeros, Beyond the Wall, the East (the Free Cites, Slaver's Bay, Asshai).

Dalla and Val are interesting choices for the Wall and the Wildlings.

Osha might also be an option to clue us into Rickon, the northern nobles, and the Wildlings.

Jorah is a possibility for the East. What if he returned to Magister Illyrio? Jorah could clue us in on Illyrio's and Varys' actions and motives while still trying to finish his own agenda of getting home.

Quentyn Martell might also be an option.

Then again the character might be wholly new to us. A servant of Illyrio. A Faceless Man. Someone who holds the secrets of adventuring in Valyria.

The Returning:
There are four POVs from prologues and epilogues... Will, Cressen, Chett and Merrett, but I don't think these have any... merit. There are three main POVs from the first three books that have been stopped... Catelyn, Eddard and Theon.

It must be Theon. But I'm willing to hear arguments for Ned and Cat.

Hey Boaz

I think that Theon's the returning POV but I'm sure this has been discussed elsewhere....

Yep, here's the link...

Well Cat would certainly be the more interesting choice but who knows what her mental state is?

Certainly Theon would give us information on what's happening in the North, which has been neglected since his last PoV.

new (that Boaz hasn't mentioned) - The Blackfish

Returning - has to be Theon, Martin's said we won't have anymore Cat POV's hasn't he? And Ned's dead. I think :)

As I mused in the other thread, the returning could be Sansa as she was Alayne in AFFC. Maybe she makes her way north or across the Narrow Sea.

The new is either: Varys, Sandor, Jorah, the Dornish guy who's on his way to Dany (can't remember his name-Doran's son), Jaqen, Blackfish, Edmure or Osha

My vote's for either Varys, Sandor or Jaqen (this last one highly unlikely)

 Oh lord Im soooo embaressed, I wonder if anyone thought of Jon's uncle as the new POV? ERR I cant remember his bloody name.

You're embarassed? Adasunshine just destroyed me with the first post! Why did I think I actually had something new to post?

I, Brian, please go ahead and blow this thread up. People can post on the other one.

I don't see the need for demolition. It's not like we haven't talked over the same points in dozens of posts in the Martin forum before....

I'm not sure Osha would be one of the new PoVs. If she has succeeded in reaching White Harbour, which from memory I think she was headed for, her actions could come under Davos's PoV. I hadn't thought about this until I read an earlier post. We know something is going on at White Harbour between Manderley and Stannis - if Rickon is there, how will he fit into Stannis's plans? Will he replace Jon as a client king of the North?

What is a prat, eh, precious? Can we eats it?

Cully, good observation on White Harbor.

One of the Manderly sons was slain at the Red Wedding, iirc. So, the Manderlys won't take Bolton authority lying down.

On the other hand, Jaime released the other Manderly son on the condition that he not take up arms against the Lannisters again.

Knowing that they've escaped the war with their heads, lands and titles intact, the remaining Manderlys may not want open war with either the Lannisters or Stannis. Rickon might just be the focal point for them to rally around and quietly plan their vengeance. But how do you hide a giant savage wolf without news getting out?

Or as you suggested, they might hand Rickon over to Stannis to serve as Lord of Winterfell.

All this to say that Davos' POV could be highly interesting. But if the Manderly's kill him, Rickon will switch POVs yet again.

Nope. There's no way that GRRM is going to kill off Davos. He couldn't be that cruel. Although saying that has probably just signed his death warrant, knowing my predictions... No, I think that something very interesting is brewing at White Harbour, and that Davos has a big role to play yet. His PoV will be one of the more interesting ones in aDwD, I am sure. Though being my fave character, it was always going to have my interest.

Here's a thought for the new POV, what about Maege Mormont?

I mean Robb sent her off to find Howland Reed just prior the Red Wedding, at which her daughter, Dacey died. Now also her nephew, Jorah's been sent off on his travels again.

Maege could be an interesting way to introduce the reader to Howland Reed's (likely) strange world. As well as that she could bump into one or more lost Starks (and companions) wandering about the north on her travels.

Try not to make such comments please, Dolorous Edd - not welcome. :)
What!?!? I was joking! Hence the "sarcastic" smile....... Boaz knows i love him (if only because of his unquenchable hatred of all things Catelyn Stark, not to mention his ridiculously and deliciously convoluted theories.). :)

Davos’ can't be dead, because martin would never kill him "off camera", and the passage it was mentioned in in AFFC would have been easily edited to remove the reference once he started tweaking stuff because of the split. So the only reason i can think he'd logically leave it in AFFC was because Davos won't be killed in ADWD, at least not in the manner the manderly's letter claims.

Do you recall a certain fellow named Eddard?

Tom, interesting though about Maege. I like it.

DE, I took it in the spirit intended! But I still don't know what a prat is... it's not part of my midwest American colloquial lexicon. I know that the Chronicles Network is billed as the "UK's biggest science fiction and fantasy website" and I appreciate you letting the Yanks participate, but sometimes I/we don't understand all the lingo.

I was thinking of adding a sig to my posts. Something classic. Something meaningful. Something relating to ASOIAF. Remember how Cato the Elder always ended his senatorial speeches with the shout "Carthage must be destroyed!" The latin is Carthago delenda est! I was thinking of...

Catelyn delenda est!

To TK-whatever: Alayne is not a seperate entity, only a role that Sansa is playing and therefore not a character that has supplanted her. She is Sansa all along.

To I, Brian: Is Clackmannashire(spelling?) a real place or is it like Yoknapatawphaw County?

To call someone a prat is to imply they are at that moment in time being rather silly or foolish. This side of the pond we have lots of lovely words of varying strengths to imply this such as 'twit', 'pillock', 'plonker' and particularly favoured by the Irish 'eejit'.

'Prat' incidently is towards the more affectionate end of the scale...

To grumpy tree: In AFFC her POV is titled Alayne and not Sansa and I think I have enough sense to realize that they are the same person. I only put it out there as a "possibility", although an unlikely one.
