Martin and Jordan?

Personally Im still waiting for all the women of the world to decide to let the guy prophesied to fight the last battle actually fight the last battle. Seriously, I thought I had an understanding of women but either Im way off base or Jordan is...

I guess what my dad says is true....

Theres only two ways to handle women....

And nobody knows either of em
*laugh* Jordans women are just hideous, not to mention they all seem to have obsessive compulsive disorder, relating to adjusting their clothing in times of stress.
Seriously, I seem to recall Min (sp?) was OK, in so far as she didn't belabour Rand all day long, but then again Jordan subtly reveals all womens motivation in the behaviour of Perrins wife (sorry, forgot her name) - she provokes him all day long in the hope he'll turn around and give her a d@mn good spanking.
Or atleast, thats what my cousin believes. I didn't make it past book 6 - does he ever actually tell her to shut up and sit down?
I just read Jordans short 'prequel' story in Legends, the same tome that contains 'Hedge Knight' and was amused to see poor little Lan being hit on by an aggressive female who refused to take no for an answer. And him apparently helpless before her until a well timed diversion whisks him away. Mr Jordan must be harbouring one hell of a grudge, or perhaps he secretly prefers tyrannical, irrational women?

My friend and I finally decided that Jordan was living vicariously through his characters. I mean, sure, all of his women are inevitably complete shrews. But Rand Al'Bore has three of them who are remarkably independent and all supposedly hot, but are for some reason more than willing to share him. Riiiiiiiight. Personal fantasy, anyone?

Ya know, I think the real issue people have with AFFC is that nothing blew up. I mean, the Tower of the Hand was burned, but there weren't any good explosions. No car chases, either. There was some Mortal Kombat, but the chick fighting wasn't even hot or scantily clothed.

Sigh.

At least, unlike most of Jordan's books, with AFFC you can't tear out the majority of the middle and still realize that nothing has changed.
Actually, I think Brienne was scantily clothed when she fought the bear. Speaking of good looking people, does anyone have any thoughts about what Loras' fate will be? I think its possible he will recover from his hideous burns, only to recoil in horror at his hideous scarred, hairless appearance and possibly kill himself. Or gain a deeper appreciation for deceptive appearances, the value of a good soul, blah blah blah. Or maybe he'll turn evil and aid Cersei in plotting! THat would be even better. An evil Loras...the new Hound.

Would have been much more entertaining if they had (or will) eventually stop being such good friends and fight to the death over him. Bare breasted knife fight sounds suitable.
But yes, it is rather a crock. And I don't recall any female characters with multiple husbands. Bah.

I never really thought about him, I just left it as a character out of the picture. You point out some interesting developments.

It is good to hear I am not the only one that can’t stomach the WOT women. I have the 4th book of Fire and Ice and it has been hard to get into. After being burned by the fall off of quality in Jordan and Goodkind, I will probably wait to see how the next couple of books are received before I dive back in.

I think a lot of people here didn't like AFFC as much because it was more "girly", i.e. more political intrigue, character developement, "feelings 'n' stuff", than the others, which were much more action-oriented. Personally, AFFC was just as fast-paced but not as frenetic and disorienting. Certainly, it's not my favorite, but that's because it's missing all the best characters!

Well, given the male characters in those books, who'd want multiples? Rand is full of angst because he's the Dragon Reborn. Perrin is full of angst because he married the most annoying woman in the world. Matt is full of alcohol and has issues with the knife dealy-thing. Lan is full of angst because he can't tame his Shrew... enough already.

Scary thing....I can remember reading Jordan when I was 14/15 with my best friend and both of us mooning over Lan.That was 10 years ago!!
Fortunately, we stopped mooning and got on with our lives.

Hello everyone I've been reading everyone's opinions on Jordan and Marten. I started reading Jordan about 10 years ago, and loved him. But, as I have gotin a little older (26) I have developed more of a taste for Marten. I think that It is becauseMarten shows the best and the werst of human nature; his character are beleavable because they are so reel. O, and He's really good at tortured soles, and I have a major thing for tortured soles.

*points finger* Shoe sadist!!!
Sorry, zjr221, I couldn't resist. Welcome to the forum!
I agree, Martins characters are fascinating.

Wow didn't realise so many people hate WOT and Jordan. Like the other person, I read the first 10 books in the series 3 months before book 11 so I didn't feel that disappointed when it seemed to go nowhere. His first 6 books were good anyway. The hair pulling and stupid women gets anoying but I just skip over them. 7 to 10 was slow but we would've never got the events in KOD without previous books. I guess it also help that I've not read LOTR yet. As for Martin which I started after Jordan, I enjoyed his books as much, including AFCC. Maybe I'm just so easily satisfied. Am I the only one who enjoy both series?

Thanks for the wellcome. As for the above responce; I don't dislike Jordan at all. He is a incredable author; it is just that Martens's characters are mor human. They have reel weeknesses that influence their disisions. Also Marten isn't as protective of his characters as Jordan is; not until this last book did Jordan allow one of his main characters to be seriously hert.

Exactly, that's also one of the reasons I like Martin, he's refreshing, not afraid to kill main characters. How I see it, WOT is for those who wants light fantasy, and Martin for those who prefers a more realistic approach and I happen to enjoy both.

I like both but have to concede that Crossroads of Twilight may be one of the worst books I've read in the last decade. Knife of Dreams was much stronger, despite having a dumb title.

Maybe it refers to the fact that he's now just sneaking up on his loyal readers in the night and knifing their dreams of an amazing series in the back ;)

I'm joining this a little late, but here goes.

I've resolved myself to seeing AFFC as a filler of time before ADWD. It was nice, with a lot of interesting things. But I've accepted that you can't judge this first 1/2 until the other 1/2 comes out. GM did admit that they were intended to be one book but he made a choice of how to split it due to length, and that his choice may turn a lot of people off (paraphrasing for you litteral nuts).

Most of my favorite actions and characters will be in the next one, and I do plan (if possible) to cut the 2 books into one and reread the whole thing (sans all of Brienne, parts of Sansa and parts of Cersei). I do hope that as the complete novel it will read brilliantly.

I recommend (as I've had recommended to me in these threads) that we wait for the next, then see how we feel.

As for Jordan, I put him down part through the 3rd book and I've never looked back (although I look forward longer than I should have). I don't consider him a good writer or an imaginative thinker. I know many will disagree but I've accepted my feelings. Most of the people I've questioned about his series seem to think its way too long, that nothing's really happening, and that he gives incredibly long descriptions for minor or trivial things (and yet they keep buying the books???). This is how I felt at the start.

To those of you who love him, enjoy, no offense intended and I know this is only my opinion. We all have varying tastes so eat it if you like it.
