8 chevrons - three on each side and one top and probably bottom even though we don't ever see it.
Unless they are going to say that you can re-use a chevron which would then give them an infinite number of combinations.

Incidentally the FAQ on MGM's site also specify that there are 9 Chevrons. http://www.stargate-sg1.com/home/faq/index.html#10

And on Showtime's site they have a little Stargate anim ( http://www.stargatesg-1.com/index2.cfm )
which shows 7 lit chevrons and 2 dark ones( at the bottom of the circle).

I'm not sure where we actually see all 9 chevrons on the gate for the first time, but we see a computer reference to in the very first episode "Children of the Gods".

It's fairly early on in the episode, O'neal goes to the gate to throw a Kleenex box through (signal to Daniel Jackson). As the Chevrons are locking we see the computer screen in the control room(the one we've seen a lot of times in the series). We see this screen two times, and if
you freeze the frame there (and assuming your material is of
sufficiently good quality :) you can count the number of Chevrons depicted on the computer screen - and there are nine.

It shall be intersting to see what they come up with (if anything) with regards to the 9th - (and even the 8'th, after all we only have Sams speculation)

Personally I'm hoping for Catering in the wormhole :)

Someone pointed it out quite some time ago. You can see the nine chevrons in Nemesis when O'Neill and Co. beam the Stargate up to Thor's ship.

The unobservant fool I am never looked at the computer screen of the Gate that closely before. ;)

Cheers,

So I hear :)

Well, most of the time we are not close enough to the screen to be easily seen.

However, I noticed in 'the 5th race', that the closeup of the 8th chevron locking doesn't seem to be the one at the bottom, but rather one at the top of the gate - perhaps a continuity error, or something more sinister.

Presumably, the last chevron to lock in would always be the top one (Don't ask me why, it makes sense to me + it looks good on the VT). So, to see the mythical 8th chevron lock in, you actually have to look at the 7th, I think. This is based on the theory that: if an 8-chevron address does indeed contain an area code, then presumably the area chevron goes at the beginning, which then pushes the rest down 1 position (or up, depending on you point of view :)). I do not know whether it is: 1 2 3 4 5 6 8 7, 8 1 2 3 4 5 6 7. I could be completely wrong, however, and it could be 1 2 3 4 5 7 8!

Where

1=x1
2=x2
3=y1
4=y2
5=z1
6=z2
7=P-O
8='Area'

Opinions?

Ah.. cute gate.

Is it one you have? Where did you get it? Does it rotate? :)

Not sure how much it can help though (even though it may be made by MGM);

If we enhance it a bit and look at the ring, you can see there are 40 pictures, not 39. And they are not unique, they are in groups of 10, wihch are repeated 4 times.

And they are not the usually symbols, they don't even have the Earth symbol there!

Although it doesn't have the chevrons, I think this gate is kinda cute. Click on the glyphs to seem them in a larger format (requires Flash plugin 3 or higher)

Where?

Smaller, where'd you find the flash gate? It's great!

But in Children of the Gods, Daniel's theory is that the pyramids are older than everybody thinks, and in The Curse

season 4 spoilers

that key artifact is over 10,000 years old, so doesn't that suggest that they were here earlier than 3000 BC?

Ninth Chevron

muzungu

Maybe the eigth Chevron dials an address in our local group or supercluster of galaxies and the ninth simply reaches beyond that and accesses other galaxies.

Maybe this would allow SG-1 to actually meat the Ancients, who 'no longer live in our region of space'.
