Slave records were terrible. People always say West Africa was where the 'slaves' came from.... They forget about central Africa and the Eastern side altogether... They should read some of the stories that the Africans themselves wrote about the trade and see how people came from everywhere and were captured everywhere and were taken to central locations to be shipped off to the Americas, Europe and even places in Africa.
Many African Americans are proud of their Native American roots especially in California, even if they don't know the name of the Nation or Nations they derived from... And for many years some people here passed as Native Americans rather than African Americans as that was more acceptable....
I keep forgetting about the creoles and cajuns in Louisiana.. sorry.. I guess that French is still spoken there! Am too much of a Yankee....and the first French speaking people I ran into were from Quebec and Haiti and Martinique...
