That's probably the best question i've ever been asked.
I suppose it needs to be answered in two parts.....
We (Gatecon) don't have any Aussie cons planned, simply because Adele from BOBW has that angle covered. We would never intrude on Adele's ground, and if we ever did, it would have to be a joint venture.
As for my role in Gatecon being an Aussie, it's a lot more complex than being the local advertising person. Because the 4 owners are from different parts of the world really makes no difference, because our cons are organised over the internet, and as you know, the internet makes the world a whole lot closer.
We all have different backgrounds, and so our roles with gatecon take our strengths and we utilise them for Gatecon. Fryn is a great organiser, Richard is a professional photographer and publicist, and Sue is great with the financial side of things.
My side is staging.... Coming from many years in theatre and a trained AV person, my job here in Aus is to design the staging and sets, and give the whole convention a theatrical feel, rather that a boring meeting atmosphere. I basically script the whole convention, although you can never script what the stars are going to do.
The other main things with the staging include designing the lighting and lighting effects, sound, AV, video cameera's and anything else that lets my spend lots of money to obtain the planned 'feel' for the con.
I also have the fun job of being the person who creates all of the introduction and music video's for the con (Wait till you see the new batch for GC2001).
But I suppose the best... best... BEST part, is I am the MC for the cons. Getting up in front of hundreds of screaming, crazed fans is scary, but such a buzz.
Did that answer things, or did I just go off into my own little world there ? LOL
