I just posted this question but forgot to fill in the subject line so here I go again. Does anyone out there have any info regarding the new weapons that the SG teams are carrying? They appear to have replaced their MP5s with some kind of bullpup design, possibly caseless ammo firing SMGs similar to the ones used in the alien movies. Thanks for any info, gfps

Welcome,gfps!

Hi,gfps,

Yes, they have replaced them with the latest weapons that the U.S. Air Foce carries. It created a stir in production as the MP5 photographs better. Stargate SG-1 has a technical specialist from the Air Force that helps keep them current on all the latest information that the Air Force has including weapons. That is why they can use photographs of the Cheyenne Mountain base in Colorado. He also has been to the Gatecon convention in Vancouver. In season 4 they had General Ryan (the Air Force Chief of Staff) who is a fan in a cameo and that was a lot of fun. In the Season 4 fora in "Prodigy" he has his web site listed!

The easiest way to navigate the section is to use the pull down menu located at the bottom of your screen. Just click on the arrrow and move the horizontal bar up or down until you find the section you want and then click on the name and then click on the go button. Please browse and feel free to post and if you don't find what you need do as you did here (post a new thread in the appropriate fora). Remember that many of our members have not yet seen the current season so please use SPOILER SPACE when talking about it outside of its fora. Keep you posts 'g' rated as we have children here posting and we don't flame other members. If you have questions or problems please contact one of the moderators by post or email (our email icon is on the bottom of our posts).

After 30 posts you will find a little surprise following you, please join us in the alien thread in General Discussions and name that follower!

We have a lot of sections at the top of the page that you can browse and post in also. In Films and Books we have more about Stargate the movie and the new one that MGM is talking about releasing and we have thread about theStargate books. Also we have other sections such as Farscape, Buffy, Dr. Who, and the Treks you can visit and post in.

You have had fun in technical so please browse and post in our other sections! Enjoy yourself here!

Thank you, !

I remembered the P diesgnation but not the rest. Thank you Muzungu. Are you going over to alien thread in General Discussions to name you follower?

FN P90

The new weapon, in case you didn't follow the link in a previous posting (which may have been good, or not -- I didn't look), is a Heckler and Koch FN-P90 submachine gun, which is an experimental weapon capable of piercing up to 42 layers of Kevlar with the right ammunition. O'Neill mentions the "new P-90s" about four episodes in advance of Prodigy when they have to go out to some apparently dangerous planet -- I don't remember the details.

Some specs on the gun itself: the muzzle velocity of the P90 is 750 m/s or, for you Americans, about 2500 f/s. That's fast, very fast. It has a firing rate of about 20 rounds a second if memory serves, but don't quote me on that. The ammunition is stored in a rear-loaded magazine that doubles as a butt, and can take up to 250 rounds, while the weapon weighs a considerable amount less than an Uzi fully loaded. The P90 is equipped with a built-in suppressor and laser sight, and I think is accurate to over 1.5 km. Some of that may not be entirely accurate, but that's the general gist. This weapon is much sweeter than the old HK MP5s, and personally I think it's a lot more photogenic -- at least, from the point of view of a designer, that's a damn nice looking weapon.

Thank you, the-Brainz! I knew we could always use a spare! That is a lot of nice information! Yes, no wonder theair force is now using them!

FN P90 update

Hello again. I was the originator of this string with my question "New guns for the SG1?" I thank "jsc" for letting me know the name of the weapon and "muzungu" for the link to an FN website. Unfortunately, the website was short on info so I have since scoured the web for all the relevant facts I could find on the subject.
Here is what I found; The gun is manufactured by Fabrique Nationale, originally a Belgian company but now manufacturing internationally. This company has nothing to do with Heckler & Koch - which is the German company that makes the MP5 submachineguns that the SGC used previously. FN also makes a new semiautomatic pistol (FiveseveN) which uses the same ammunition.
The P90 features the new 5.7mm x 28 cartridge which appears to be a hybrid calber that is halfway between the old 9mm pistol round of the MP5 and the .223 assault rifle round used by most NATO countries, including the U.S. M16. 9mm bullets are relatively large and heavy and travel at about 1500 feet per second (fps) while the .223 is lighter and smaller and moves out at around 2800 fps. The .223 will travel much farther and shoot straighter than a 9mm but is not as practical in close combat/indoor situations. Armor piercing teflon tipped ammo is available in several calibers and is really nothing new or special about the 5.7mm round. Also, regular .223 "ball" ammo can pentrate many layers of kevlar and body armor due to the high velocity and sharp bullet tip. Fully loaded with a 50 round mag, the P90 weighs about the same 6.6 lbs as a fully loded MP5 with 30 rounds. The P90 has a cyclic rate of fire of 900 rounds per minute (15 rounds per second) on fully automatic setting. The muzzle velocity of the standard 5.7mm ball ammo is 2345 feet per second. There are 3 ammo types including a quiet subsonic bullet (998 fps) to be used in conjunction with a silencer for covert ops.
The "bullpup" design means that the ammo magazine sits BEHIND the trigger/handle and the barrel starts further back as well. The benefit of this is that you can have a longer barrel weapon (which will shoot straighter and farther) while decresing the overall length of the gun.
I could go on for a quite a while about the revolutionary 50 round magazine design, the built in optical sighting system and a host of other wonderful features but you can find all this out and more for yourself with a basic websearch. My final conclusion on the subject is that it appears to be the perfect gun for the SGC members and I hope they start using them to kick some alien butt in the coming episodes. At a cost of $1332 US per basic gun and $2220 with laser sight, they better get some confirmed kils pretty quick!!!! gfps

Somebody had to...

I just knew that somebody was going to show me up by getting a whole lot of information on the P90 and posting it. Still, I'm fairly certain about the HK issue. In fact, I believe that Fabrique Nationale designed and patented the FN-P90, and then licensed it out to companies like Heckler and Koch to manufacture in their native countries, for NATO et al.

And one thing -- when you quote stuff, even big impressive facts and figures like that, include a link. Don't make any statements without backing them up with evidence ;)

You may be right. Maybe H&K did get a contract from FN to produce the P90 but I couldn't find any reference to it anywhere. It IS a common practice for manufacturers to "farm out" contracts to foreign factories especially in countries with economically protectionist governments. My Toyota Camry was maufactured (assembled) in Kentucky but most of the component parts were still made in Japan. My Toshiba TV was made in Lebanon Tennessee and so on...
As for links to websites, here are a couple of them where I found most of the info I posted in my last e-mail. All of the data I stated as fact (weight, cost, rpm etc...) can be found within these sites. I'd like to see an SG1 episode where they exchange technology with an alien race and they wind up sending a group of Belgian gunmakers (haha) through the Stargate to set up a P90 factory on another planet. Talk about intergalactic "Free Trade" and NAFTA!!! gfps

Sweeeet

Say, did you use the same keywords as me in that search...? Come to that, did you use Google? Google's Good. Hmmm..

Anyhoo, I have to say the idea of a P90 factory on another planet is pretty damn funny. I can just imagine the Goa'uld invading, and seeing the army of Belgian gun-makers:

"Oh crap! It's those freaking Tau'ri and their blasted little submachinegun -- kree, run!"

Maybe I'll write that into my novella...

P90 Ray Gun?

I normally use www.search.com and the results are usually pretty good. The keywords I used were FN and P90 and it came back with plenty of results. I have to tell ya though, the more pix I see of the P90, the more it reminds me of some alien "ray gun". Maybe the concept was reverse engineered from some real alien technology - it could happen! Or maybe it originated from a (dubbed in Belgian) broadcast of the original Stargate movie. Wouldn't that be wild if the P90 was inspired by something out of a sci-fi movie - at least the cosmetics and ergonomics of it!!!! I mean, I've never seen a gun that looks anything like the P90 except in sc-fi. Actually, the Steyr AUG looks pretty space age too but the FN takes it to another level. Anyway, I ramble on..... gfps

It's not unusual

It is not uncommon for the reality of tomorrow to be based on the fiction of today. The bridges of US Navy submarines were modelled off the bridge of the Enterprise due to the efficient design; atom-beam experimentation is leading us to devices quite similar to phasers (albeit a tad bigger and not quite as nifty), matter manipulation is yielding results that look rather like the precursors to replicator technology -- the only thing I haven't heard of being researched are forcefields, no doubt because the NSA already has them ;)

However, while the P90 may well have been partially inspired off science fiction, and the guy who designed it obviousy wasn't a standard, run-of-the-mill orthodox dude, it was probably engineered more with its design plan in mind than sci-fi. Sure, making it look cool is sure as hell important, but if you look carefully at how it's made, it's actually a brilliantly efficient design -- everything is compact, the butt doubles as a mag, laser sights can be added with no loss of space, the muzzle is longer and more accurate for the same length -- it's an utterly awesome weapon. Probably some alien showed us how it ought to be done, granted, but that isn't sci-fi -- it's real ;)

I agree with that! Do you agree with this?

I agree with THE_BRAINZ! Everything is possible. I'd like to go on with this thread but I can't think of anything else to add or say about the P90 right now.

Instead, I've started a new controversy in another section. It starts in the "Stargate General Discussions" under "Stargate for Guys & Girls". Most of the posts there appeared to be from women so I figured I'd add a male perspective and see if I could stir something up! My post is the long winded one titled "Tapping a male point of view". I hope to get some feedback on this theory so go there and check it out. gfps

I have enjoyed this discussion about the P90, even though I mostly lurked and read! Great points made. Efficiency provokes new designs and loved the double use for everything and the more compact styling! It took great thought and planning!

You asked for it...

All right gfps; since you mentioned that, I couldn't pass it up. I don't normally post on General Discussion except when I get really bored and no one is posting on Technical (slow, it is), but this warranted a five-hundred word essay for all those daring or foolish enough to ask me for my thoughts ;0

If you pay a penny for a standard thought, think how rich I should be by now...

Yes, I do know how to use smileys; yes, I do scorn them; and yes, clicking that damn check-box in the options menu every time I post is a complete pain. Anyone like to suggest to the administrators that selecting whether to post with smileys by default should be in your profiles menu? Or am I the only one who actually cares enough to change it?

kel sha,

the "p" @ P90 stands for "para" ?

i think they've the H&K MP5 Navy but the type of the rocket launcher they've in COTG i don't know :)

it's quite interestin' but the guns mentioned here are avaiable in counterstrike (a mod for the game half-life) ..
