this is really part of another thread mentioned here, but with a slightly different slant on it

part of why stargate appeals to me as well as the guys is because it has the element of the pure sci fi in it, but it isn't just that...

it is a bit of a drama now:

the tantalising hint of the Sam - Jack relationship

teal'c's son rya'c

sam's father becoming ill

sam's reaction to cassandra

jack's erm, son Charlie

and daniel's search for shar'ee

sci-fis like starwars or trekkie do not have these emotive elements in, and adding them vastly broadens stargate's target audience

that's my speech over, but i'd like to hear your opinion.

yeah

yeah,

d'ya mean like in the gamekeeper?

i'd like like to hear more about jack's past -- the happy parts

I totally agree with that, and that is precisly the point I try to get across to my misunderstanding family. It's not all little green men and flying saucers. There's real drama in there too. Think of the one's containing the pasts of the characters, some of them are the best episodes for me. Think of:

'Cold Lazarus' - Jack and Charlie.
'First Commandment' - Sam's Ex.
'Gamekeeper' - Daniel's parents.
'Secrets' - Sam's attitude to her father.

Also, I love the other parts of drama and emotion incorporated into the programme, particlularly those with Daniel/Sha're, and also Sam and her father in 'Tok'ra 1+2'.
I have just bought and watched the Serpents Song/Holiday video. Oh my God! (sorry.) The scene with Apophis and Daniel in 'Song', Daniel and Machello in 'Holiday'.
No-one dare tell me that isn't dramatic, and brilliant drama at that!
Those two just totally blew me away.

Apart from that, there is also a hint of mainstream drama in the relationships between the characters. For those who like to watch the main four people develop, surely a lot of that should come from interaction amongst themselves? Just a thought.

true...

yeah, nicely said mate!

if i tell some one that i like stargate, they immediately think; sci fi freak.

and so would i if i hadn't seen it.

but it is a drama too, and is much more emotive than an ordinary sci fi.

you've got it in one!

Oh, finally someone who sees things my way.
Sorry spookypumpkin, it just gets on my nerves when siblings of mine put Stargate down without knowing anything about it.

Hehe, I don't let my siblings not know anything about it! :p

Heh heh, good idea. I usually have to watch with my sister sitting listening to her cd player. She makes comments
'Hey this thing goes too fast for me'
'That guy should be dead with a haircut like that!'
'What the Hell is going on?'
'Isn't that guy dead already?'
That's what I face on a Sunday.
Why am I moaning about this ? Pathetic aren't I?
That's rethorical.

I know exactly how you feel. When my sister isn't yelling out "MacGyver" every 3 seconds she's always asking questions:

"Hang on, isn't he one of those bad aliens"
"No, He's a Tok'ra"
"A what?"
"SHUT UP!!!!"

ha ha unlucky you! both my siblings love stargate although not as much as me. the only person who even asks annoying q's is my mom and even now she's getting the hang of who's who.

Lucky you. The only comments my Mum makes is.
'Are they supposed to be aliens?'
'What's with the woman and that girl?' - Sam and Cassie in 'Singularity'.
Oh, and my sister hates it that none of the important characters die, and thinks Graham Simmons should of died in 'Message in a Bottle' because she didn't like the look of him.
She also makes comments about Richard Dean Anderson being the one, plus MacGyver, made fun of in 'The Simpsons'. She think it's hilarious that he's now in a show I like. I don't.

Actually my problem is the other way. I have to put up with my 25 year old son telling me that I'm a sad old bat for liking Stargate! I definitely am a closet Stargate fan. I don't dare tell anyone how that I like it because I get looks that say......'Get a life lady!'

(I am 50 in March - god....half a century old and hooked on a TV show! How sad is this?)

:D

my siblings are faaaaaaaaaaaaar more considerate...

in fact they are practically non existant...

well, they ARE non existant!! he he

i do get rid of my parents before watching an ep, coz i get comments from my father too...

My whole family watches Stargate (we're all Sci-fi freaks :))
I was at a geology summer school in Durham last summer and most of the people I talked to were Stargate fans. It was good to meet so many people who were fans as well.

My parents think I am mad.......
My Bro thinks I'm mad....
My sis-is-law thinks I'm mad.....
My little bro thinks I'm mad...

BUT

my parents just ignore me....or tell me to shut up when they have heard enough about it
my Bro lets me record and watch the show in his room (he has Sky) plus he records it for me when I'm not in the country..like now
my sis-in-law likes the show..thinks its cool....but has prob heard enough about RDA
my little bro is my bro......and he lets me watch it when I'm staying with him..along with MacGyver....and just about anything else with RDA on....plus he lets me use his comp 24/7 to read about Stargate when I'm having withdrawal symptoms from it only being on at weekends in the USA....

OH...and God help ANYONE who disturbs me when Stargate is on.........they have all learned that one

rda

oh, it's definately rde that makes me watch it

even the teachers @ school r havin' a go @ me 4 talking sgc!!!

hee hee

Hmm, seems people are in different situations. 50? Nothing wrong with that. It is a good TV show you're hooked on.
My little sister watches, and moans when it's not on. Brother, who's 7, yes, 7, causes a problem: Watching 'Need', 5:30, grandparents in next room. I watch. I scream inwardly. I try to block screen from view of 10 and 7yr olds. They yell at me. I tell them they'll thank me for it in a way , and hope they don't bring it up in another conversation. On the other hand, I have a few people I speak to about Sci-Fi in general at school (Makes double Maths pass more easily).

you're lucky. i tried to get my mom to watch sg with me one night, it was on & she came home...it was new ground and she made me change the channel right after she saw t-man stick his hand in his tummy to check on junior...now there's an indoctrination for ya!

gee mom, not only is he an alien he has a little one inside him...

Okay, little ones, I have to say something else now. As a mom of two very adult sons, one of whom has a 2 year old of his own, where are you getting all of these 'whussy' moms from? :)

I am assuming (dangerous occupation) that your moms will probably be about my age (old!) or thereabouts and I am a fan of the show. I also gon't go all pale and interesting because Teal'c does something messy with Junior. Mind you, I also don't go in a spin at a glimpse of Daniel's/Jack's body either. I admit freely I lean more to the Goa'uld side. Of course that might be my age and a longing to live dangerously!

However, I was a soldier who served in two operational theatres, so maybe that explains why....

:D
