That is a fascinating area for your expertize! It shows both the best and the worst in human nature usually at the same time. For instance while the USA is preparing itself for war (1942) and fighting for freedom it is denying it to its citizens of Japanese descent and readying 'work camps' for them.... did they do the same to their citizens of German or Italian descent....nope! And the army was segregated....African Americans were recruited as soldiers and used as servants and cooks.... (Groups like the Tuskeegee Airmen and the Fighting units came later!)

america prepares for war in 1939, but enters in war the 7th of december 1941...and i know every details of the battle of stalingrad... did u know that von paulus became a communist after the war? and the amazing thing is, he's bambou's grandfather, that bambou woman was the wife of serge gainsbourg (but i don't think u know him..)

America was awfully isolationist. I think they would have gotten in the war eventually but only if England had fallen. Japan was the major worry especially on the West Coast but the attack on Peral Harbor got us in more quickly.

They would lock you up until they found your passport then they would have a lot of publicity and expell you from the country! 1962 was still an era when people talked about the Red Menace and meant communism not a sports figure!

exactly -- in 1962 screaming 'communism' anywhere - not just DC would get you in more trouble than you would know - ppl were 'blacklisted' for just being 'suspected' of being communist - and i don't think they would expell you from the country - they would keep you under wraps/lock and key -- charge of treason probably -- until they felt you were no longer a threat

oh - and the original thread topic - what do i hate about Stargate? the 4th ep of season 5 - "The Fifth Man" - that's the biggest thing i hate about the show so far ---

i also don't like that Dr. Fraiser and Major Davis, when they're on, get almost no lines or any of the action --- blah - writers --

I know! Janet saw action in "Hathor" and in Season 5's "Rite of Passage".... she got to do some in Serpent's Song...Season 2 and "Threashold" Season 5 and was good in Legacy (Season 3)

Major Davis did nore in Season 4....but None of the stay at homes get much action!

but - if i'm not mistaken, i heard/read somewhere that Katie Steuart wasn't available to play Cassandra for this ep, so they had to find someone else --- it wasn't one of those - hey, let's get a different actress for the part just b/c things ---


oh - and this show is done in Cananda - so don't say 'stupid Americans' on this one --

Hi Stillzen..... I can see why you would be so outraged and so are many of us. You don't say how old you are, but I imagine from what you are saying that you are still fairly young.

I am 50 and a former soldier who served in the Falklands, Northern Ireland, the Gulf War and was part of a peacekeeping exercise relating to the Kurds. As a civilian I also had the job of hostage debriefing and the counselling and debriefing of soldiers returning from Bosnia and Kosovo. As a soldier I was one of the first women trained in the British Army as a combat soldier, we were an experiment because they wanted to see just how women would truly fare in combat and whether we could do it. all of us except two or three passed with flying colours.

So I have actually seen combat.... I have been in combat and know what it's like to both face and kill an enemy. I have 'walked the walk' and I have 'talked the talk'.

You are angry right now, and with justification. but it's one thing to sit in a position of relative safety and believe you could kill another human being. It is another to actually do it. It's one thing to kill from a distance, and it's another to do it 'up close and personal'.

And who precisely will you kill? A very vague enemy has been identified. Possibly Osama bin Laden, although he is probably responsible. But there are many many groups....like a Hydra, cut the head off one and another springs up in its place.

Let's hope that cool heads prevail among our leaders...... If you wish to discuss what I have just written please PM me rather than post on this thread and I will be delighted to oblige.

That is all I have to say on this topic..... and with that, would like to give a gentle reminder that this thread is about what people may or may not hate about Jack (and the others!) and that there are a couple of more appropriate threads for discussion about the horrific events and possible aftermath of the last few days!! And since this is not really about Season 5, but more about Jack I think it should be moved to the Jack threads. However I will put a little spoiler warning in the title, just in case!
