That's may be because Buffy is at it's core a people story.
Most sci-fi shows are about time travel, or space travel, or flashing weapons or... well, you get the idea.
Stargate and many others are fun to watch but the characters don't even have homes, at least not any that we see. The interactions between the characters are secondary to the story of the week. [I'm going to make some Stargate fans mad with that, but that's the way I see it.]
Buffy is about a young woman growing up. Sure, she's the Slayer, but even as she fights demons and vampires, we're more concerned about her love life, or her home life, or... well, you get the idea. It's about a person, not a thing.
