those piccys do look very much like the "Akira" class starships.. very streamlined also, i would have hoped for something more "patched together" like you say, "more bits and bobs stuck on"
in that last link tosection 31, the interview is interesting, Bakula is saying they're the first warp-powered starship, never mind the 1st enterprise...
"This is 150 years from today; this is 2151, 100 years before Kirk and Spock. So we are the first. We've just figured out how to use the propulsion system and we are going out in warp speed for the first time."
surely Cochrane figured it out about 90 years before that, so they've been sat on their behinds for a while to get this going

You are a little unfair. The flight of Cochranes' Phoenix was immediately following a devastating Nuclear World War. It used spare parts and an old missile, but how he was able to research and develop the warp engine is unclear. He was just an amazingly brilliant engineer!!
It would take some time for the world to get back in order, rebuild itself and form a government. No money for pointless spaceflights to other worlds. The Vulcans don't think we are ready yet for new technology, (Hey! you just blew yourselves up, you wanna do it again!)
It would take some event (Klingon ship crashlands) for it to happen.
That's just my own theory, but I think they are trying hard to walk a minefield of nits, and this is one path through it.
Look in this weeks T.V. guide and there is a pull out picture of the new enterprise. It's a bit of a dissapointment as it looks much more sophisticated than the original Enterprise. :rotate:
